When God is described in Exodus 34:6, it is compassion that leads the way. It seems this is an increasingly rare trait in our world. Hardness, cruelty, and strength seem to be the way to get what you want and where you want. Compassion and caring for others slows us down and gets in our way.

And yet, “for this reason God highly exalted [Jesus] and gave him the name above every name” (Philippians 2:9). In a world where we are told in “might makes right” it can be hard to believe that we should lead with compassion. But that’s exactly what Jesus did and one day every knee will bow at his name. Maybe the way up is down. Maybe the greatest truly are those who serve others.
