Sunday School lesson for January 8, 2023

Every Christian professes belief in eternal life. Yet, very often, when we think of death, we get scared at the uncertainty of our fate. Perhaps this is because we do not feel certain about our salvation. Some may doubt Christ’s promise. Our enslaved ancestors sang often of heaven—of the streets paved with gold, the pearly gates, where the Sabbath would have no end. They longed for the day when “trouble will be no more” and every person would live in freedom and equality. Perhaps because there has been a general improvement in our social and economic standing, many of us now appear to place more value on life on earth than eternal life. No matter what attainments life holds, it can never compare to the future glory of life with Christ Jesus. As Christians, we must rejoice in our assurance of eternal life and leave the matter of when we will go to heaven in the hands of God.

It is difficult to stand by our convictions when other people think we are crazy. Confident that he spoke the truth, Paul did not back down from sharing the story of his faith in Christ.

Lesson 7
MONDAY
Women Find Jesus’ Tomb Empty
(Mark 16:1–8)
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome purchased [sweet-smelling] spices, so that they might go and anoint Him.
2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”
4 Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, though it was extremely large.
5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right, wearing a [long, stately] white robe; and they were amazed and bewildered.
6 And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen; He is not here. See, [here is] the place where they laid Him.
7 But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see Him there, just as He told you.’ ”
8 They went out and fled from the tomb, for they were seized with trembling and astonishment; and they said nothing [about it] to anyone, because they were afraid. '

One thing is certain", writes William Barclay, "if Jesus had not risen from the dead, we would never have heard of Him. . . The attitude of the disciples was that everything had finished in tragedy. By far the best proof of the Resurrection is the existence of the Christian church" (Daily Study Bible Series, The Gospel of Mark, p. 368).
