Marvelous Faith
Devotional Passage - Luke 7:1-10
Read the Bible Through - Deuteronomy 5-6: Mark 8:11-26
When Jess heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no not in Israel.
-Luke 7:9
The word marvel is used twice in Scripture to describe Jesus' reaction. Luke 7 is one of those occasions. Jesus marveled at a soldier's faith. A Roman centurion, a Gentile out-sider, sent word to Jesus to heal his servant. But he didn't ask Jesus to touch his servant or stand in his presence. He believed Christ's word was enough. He understood that Jesus held true divine authority. The centurion's confidence in Jesus didn't come from ritual or religion but from a raw recognition of who Jesus is. that kind of faith is rare. And when Jesus heard it, He stopped in his tracks.
What would it take for Jesus to marvel at your faith? It wouldn't be busyness, perfection, or belief, but uncomplicated, unhindered trust in His power and His word. Sometimes, we treat faith like a performance. But genuine faith is quite confidence in God's character and power.
The centurion didn't have all the proper credentials, but he had the right kind of faith. It moved Jesus' heart, and it till does today.
Father, help me have marvelous faith that moves You. May I trust Your word more than my own understanding.
