Two words change everything: “But God.”

In Ephesians 2:4, Paul turns from the hopeless condition of sinners—dead in sin, following the world, enslaved to the flesh, and deserving of wrath—to the mercy and love of God.

Salvation does not begin with us climbing out of the grave, working harder, or making ourselves acceptable to God. It begins with God, who is rich in mercy and great in love.
