This picture was taken by our own Jonathan Reichman from the Mt. of Olives in Jerusalem. This is view of the eastern side of the Temple Mount. Jesus will come from heaven and land somewhere very near this location with His eyes set upon this same view.

Rosh Hashanah begins this Saturday and is the first of 10 holy days, called "Ten Days of Awe" (Yamin Nora'im), which will end with Yom Kippur.

This Sunday I'll be teaching from John 2:1-11 and covering the first miracle that John recorded. Just as Jesus came for the wedding feast, soon he will come for another; the Wedding Feast of the Lamb. It will be a great celebration with the playing of the Shofar, the Coronation of the King, the Opening of the Book of Life, and more than we can image!

I recently heard an interesting statement about rescue: when a rescuer looks directly into the eyes of the person he is trying to save, a powerful bond can form between them.

Imagine being trapped in a burning building, caught in rushing water, or injured with no way to save yourself. Suddenly, through the confusion, you see the face of your rescuer. He looks into your eyes and says, โ€œLook at me. Iโ€™ve got you. Stay with me.โ€ At that moment, everything else seems to disappear. Your attention is fixed on the one person who can get you out.

What a picture of Jesus!

The Bible tells us that we were in need of a rescue far greater than anything a firefighter, paramedic, or lifeguard could accomplish. Sin had separated us from God, and there was nothing we could do to save ourselves.

But Jesus came for us. โ€ (Luke 19:10) He did not stand at a safe distance and shout instructions. He entered our world. He took our sin upon Himself. He went all the way to the cross and gave His life to rescue ours. Perhaps that is why Hebrews tells us to keep โ€œlooking unto Jesus.โ€

When Peter walked on the water, he was doing fine as long as his attention was on Christ. But when he looked at the wind and the waves, fear took over and he began to sink. His desperate prayer was only three words: โ€œLord, save me.โ€ Immediately, Jesus reached out His hand and caught him.

Maybe today the waves around you seem especially high. Perhaps circumstances have changed suddenly, the future seems uncertain, or you simply don't know what tomorrow will bring. Look into the eyes of your Rescuer.

The same Savior who rescued you from sin is still holding you today. When fear says, โ€œYouโ€™re going under,โ€ keep your eyes on Jesus. When circumstances say, โ€œThere is no way out,โ€ look toward the One whose hand is already reaching for you. There is something very special about the bond between the rescued and the rescuer. And for the Christian, that bond is eternal.

Most of us have spent more time in waiting rooms than we would like. We check in, find a chair, and wait for someone to call our name. As the minutes pass, we begin watching the door. Every time it opens, we wonder, โ€œIs it my turn?โ€

Waiting becomes even more difficult when we don't know what is waiting for us on the other side of that door.

Life has its waiting rooms too. We wait for test results, a doctor's report, a loved one to recover, an answer to prayer, a job offer, or a difficult situation to change. Sometimes we know approximately how long the wait will be. Other times, there seems to be no end in sight.

The Bible is filled with people who waited. Abraham waited for the son God had promised. Joseph waited in prison. David was anointed king but waited years before sitting on the throne. Waiting has always been part of God's work in the lives of His people.

There is a difference between waiting ๐‘“๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ ๐‘ ๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘’๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” and waiting ๐‘œ๐‘› God. When we are waiting for something, our attention is on the answer: When will this happen? When will things change? When will God answer my prayer? But when we wait on the Lord, our attention shifts from the answer to the One who holds the answer. That doesn't make waiting easy. There may still be uncertainty, disappointment, and fear. But God's silence does not mean God's absence.

Think about a doctor's waiting room. While you are sitting outside wondering what is happening, people may be working behind the door. Charts are being reviewed, tests examined, and preparations made. You cannot see any of it, but that doesn't mean nothing is happening.

The same is true in life's waiting rooms. We may not see what God is doing, but He is still at work.

Perhaps today you find yourself in one of life's waiting rooms. You have prayed, but the answer hasn't come. You have asked God for direction, but the next step isn't clear. Don't mistake waiting for wasted time. God may be working in circumstances you cannot see. He may be changing a situation, strengthening your faith, or teaching you to trust Him one day at a time.

Eventually, in a waiting room, someone opens the door and calls your name. Until God opens the door before you, remain faithful where you are. Pray. Trust. Listen. And remember: While we are waiting, God is working.

When we think of a king, we often picture someone who is distant from ordinary people. He lives behind palace walls, surrounded by guards. If you wanted to speak with him, you couldn't simply walk through the door. You would need permission, an appointment, and perhaps someone important to introduce you.

Our God is the King of kings and Lord of lords. He created the heavens and the earth. He rules over all creation. Yet one of the most remarkable truths of Scripture is that this great and mighty King invites us to draw near to Him. โ€ Think about that for a moment. The God who spoke the universe into existence wants a personal relationship with us.

Throughout the Bible, we see God drawing near to His people. He walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden. He spoke with Moses. He heard Hannah when she prayed in her sorrow. He was with David when he faced Goliath and when he later hid from his enemies. But the greatest example came when God sent His Son into the world.

Jesus did not enter this world in a magnificent palace. He came as a baby, born in Bethlehem. During His ministry, He walked dusty roads, ate with ordinary people, touched lepers, welcomed children, comforted the grieving, and spent time with those whom others rejected.

The King came near. And He still does.

There are times when God may seem far away. Perhaps we are facing illness, grief, disappointment, uncertainty, or a prayer that seems unanswered. During those times, we may wonder, โ€œGod, where are You?โ€ But God's presence is not determined by our feelings.

Psalm 145:18 reminds us: โ€œ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐ฟ๐‘‚๐‘… โ€ We don't have to make an appointment to speak with God. We don't have to wait until Sunday morning or find exactly the right words. Through Jesus Christ, we have been given access to the throne of God. Hebrews 4:16 tells us: โ€œ๐ฟ๐‘’๐‘ก ๐‘ข๐‘  ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘“๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘’ ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘™๐‘‘๐‘™๐‘ฆ ๐‘ข๐‘›๐‘ก๐‘œ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘’ ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘”๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’, ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘ก ๐‘ค๐‘’ ๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘ฆ ๐‘œ๐‘๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘› ๐‘š๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘๐‘ฆ, ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘“๐‘–๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘”๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’ ๐‘ก๐‘œ โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘™๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘› ๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘š๐‘’ ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘›๐‘’๐‘’๐‘‘.โ€

What an invitation! The throne belongs to a King, yet for the child of God it is also a throne of grace.

Whatever you are facing today, you do not face it alone. When you are frightened, He is near. When you are hurting, He is near. When you don't know what tomorrow holds, He is near. And when you simply need someone who understands, He is near. The King of all creation has opened the door and invited you into His presence. Draw near to Him todayโ€”and remember, the King is already drawing near to you.

James 4:14

We make plans every day. We look at the calendar and think about what we will do tomorrow, next week, or next month. We schedule appointments, make reservations, plan trips, and assume that tomorrow will unfold much like today. But sometimes life changes without warning.

This week has been one of those times for our family. Instead of following the plans we had made, I found myself in the ICU with a brain bleed. Suddenly, the things that seemed important a few days ago did not seem nearly as important. Life had changed, and it had changed quickly.

The Bible reminds us that life has always carried this kind of uncertainty. His answer is sobering: "๐’Š๐’• ๐’Š๐’” ๐’๐’Š๐’Œ๐’† ๐’‚ ๐’—๐’‚๐’‘๐’๐’“" (James 4:14). Think about the steam rising from a cup of hot coffee on a cool morning. For a moment you can see it clearly, and then it disappears. That is the picture Scripture gives us of the brevity of our earthly lives.

That does not mean we should live in fear of what might happen tomorrow. The uncertainty of life should remind us to place our confidence in the One who is certain. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but God does.

Perhaps one of the greatest lessons life's unexpected moments can teach us is not to just prepare for retirement, vacations, and emergencies, but to prepare for the one appointment every person will eventually keep.

None of us knows how many tomorrows we have. But we can know where we will spend eternity. (John 11:25)

Life is uncertain. Our plans can change in an instant. But Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. So make your plans. Enjoy the people God has placed in your life. Treasure ordinary days. Say the words that need to be said. Don't postpone what truly matters. And above everything else, make certain that when your earthly tomorrow does not come, your eternal tomorrow will be spent with Christ.
