Probably the greatest irony I have ever experienced is the lack of any clear teaching on the subject of repentance. I came from extremely conservative anabaptist circles into conservative but more mainstream protestant circles. Of course, repentance is a major theme in Anabaptist circles. But in conservative fundamental churches, I have been amazed at the lack of teaching and preaching in this regard.

I honestly can scarcely think of a sermon I’ve heard that was on the subject of repentance in the past 10 years. It is almost non-existent in our Christian tracts and literature. I have even come across those that teach that repentance is not necessary for salvation. A baffling statement in itself. From John the Baptist, to Jesus Christ, to Peter, all the way towards the end of the book of Acts where Paul echos this same message, repentance was always taught as the precursor to saving faith. Never separate. Never a thought that repentance was some kind of works salvation.

I believe the powerlessness of the modern church hinges, not on a lack of teaching on faith, but a lack of teaching, preaching, and exercising repentance. The preaching of the cross, taking up the cross, dying to the self life, returning to God are concepts not effectively brought out. And yet throughout the New Testament, it was a the major theme. Even in Hebrews chapter 6 it is spoken of.

And while we try to stir excitement in our ranks for the things of God, I think we must first put a knife into that old flesh and teach the power of the cross, not just that Jesus died on, but that symbolizes our death to self with Him, if we ever expect to see the power of His Resurrection.
