ALL SOULS UNITARIAN CHURCH - TULSA, OKLAHOMA
All Souls is a welcoming community. Everyone, regardless of age, race, culture, economic status, gender identity or sexual orientation is welcome at All Souls. Our Story
The story of All Souls Unitarian Church is the story of a Church of the Free Spirit, founded on the principles of freedom, reason, fellowship, service and character. The church was sta

rted by people who came to Tulsa to seize the opportunities of a booming oil town. They could see that the presence of a liberal religious voice was needed for the healthy development of the community. They envisioned a congregation coming together for the worship of God and the service of humankind. They built a Church of the Free Spirit. Today more than 1,800 adults claim All Souls as their spiritual home. Our membership includes business, state and civic leaders, and people from all walks of life, who hold a broad spectrum of personal and political views. Our building often houses both sides of a controversy. We unite on Sunday mornings in the spirit of love and in the search for beauty, truth and good for all. It is a story of strong ministry. The congregation has sought and called young clergy who were unafraid to exercise the power and freedom of the pulpit to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable; ministers who were unafraid to speak out in the community about reproductive rights, civil rights and the rights of those who had suffered past wrongs; ministers who were and are willing to act as well as to speak prophetically. It is a story of unity and diversity. In a delicately and respectfully held balance, our congregation worships together while individually holding a broad spectrum of beliefs and unbeliefs. We are a congregation grounded in the notion that Love is the Spirit and we are willing to engage in the personal struggles and collective labors required to keep it so for future generations. Each day we learn better how to celebrate what we have in common and to respect the ways in which we differ. We can see the dream becoming a reality. As we approach our Centennial we can see the dream becoming reality – the church of All Souls – a church of the free spirit.

We've all broken something.

A promise. A relationship. Trust. Sometimes even our own values.

During our Promise & Repair service, Rev. Marlin Lavanhar reflected on what it means to sit honestly with brokenness instead of turning away from it.

As Tulsa commemorated the 105th anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, this service invites us to consider not only the promises broken throughout our history, but also the opportunities for repair that still exist today.

What does repair look like after something has been broken?

Promise & Repair Ritual | May 31, 2026 | All Souls Unitarian Church

Today is the 105th anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. As our city and congregation recognize this dark part of history, we hold this ritual to account for harm caused by broken promises and to also ask how healing and repair can begin

What does repair actually require after harm has been done?

As Tulsa marks the 105th anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, All Souls Unitarian Church continues the work of Promise & Repair — an effort to confront difficult history honestly and ask what repair requires now.

All Souls was founded in 1921, the same year as the massacre. One of our founders also owned the Tulsa Tribune, the newspaper long associated with helping inflame the violence that destroyed Greenwood.

Rather than avoiding that history, this service exists to acknowledge it honestly. Because repair cannot begin without truth.

Every person has experienced harm. Every person has broken trust, failed someone, or struggled with what it means to make things right. Promise & Repair asks what becomes possible after trust has been broken — in communities, in relationships, and in ourselves.

This year’s service features nationally recognized civil rights attorney Damario Solomon-Simmons, whose work representing the last living survivors of the massacre and Justice For Greenwood has helped bring renewed national attention to Greenwood and the continuing questions of accountability and repair more than a century later.

Magic City Books will also be with us Sunday morning with copies of Redeem a Nation, Solomon-Simmons’ book chronicling the legal fight for justice on behalf of massacre survivors.

We hope you'll join us
