“How to Deal with a Toxic Mother in God’s Way”

“How to Deal with a Toxic Mother in God’s Way” - What do you do when the woman who should nurture and support you is the source of your pain?

The mother-child relationship can be complicated. All mothers make mistakes. Perhaps mistakes and character flaws are two different things.

A mother can become toxic to her child when her troublesome behavior becomes so deeply ingrained that she doesn’t even realize the harm she’s causing. Toxic mothers have a way of never assuming responsibility, always putting all blame on others, and manipulating.

When this happens, even adult children are left terribly confused. They want so much to believe that their mothers are loving and nurturing, but what they get instead is an onslaught of accusations that leave them feeling devastated without being able to truly pinpoint why.

If a mother does any of these following things regularly, it suggests her behavior is toxic:

* Disregarding of your feelings and needs
* Emotionally unavailable
* Emotionally blackmailing
* Controlling
* Critical
* Comparing you to others
* Disrespectful of your boundaries
* Manipulative
* Often playing the victim
* Self-centered
* Unapologetic
* Blaming
* Attacking
* Obsessed with putting on a good front

What do you do when you want to love your mother, but her toxic behavior is leaving you in desperate need of an antidote?

When you are in doubt, you can look to the Bible. It teaches us many things, including 5 ways to deal with a toxic mother:

#1. Grieve The Loss

“But she’s still alive,” you say. That may be true, but death is only one form of loss.

Many people with toxic mothers need to grieve the loss of a loving relationship with their mother, as it will likely never be.

Expecting it to change will likely only bring further heartache. I realize this can be painful to admit, but God is close to the broken hearted: “Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will hold me close.” (Psalm 27:10)

#2. Forgive

Whether your mother knows her behavior is toxic or not, forgiveness is not for her, but it’s for you.

First, it keeps you in God’s will. Secondly, it releases you from carrying the burden.

If Jesus could forgive people He didn’t know for something so horrific as nailing Him to a cross, we too can forgive others for their toxic behavior.

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34a)

Just remember, you forgive her but you do not need to trust her. You can forgive and still have boundaries.

#3. Get Healing

Your mother’s toxic behavior is not a reflection of you. Even though it may have left you with deep emotional wounds, it shouldn’t define you.

Your identity should be in Christ, not in the unrealistic expectation of others. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)

#4. Set Realistic Expectations

During your healing journey, you will likely get healthier but this does not mean that your mother will change.

Be prayerful that she does, but the Bible says in Proverbs 13:12a, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick.”

When someone shows you who they are, you would be wise to believe them. Pray that she is open to allowing God to change her, but in the mean time, don’t expect her behavior to change overnight.

If there’s been no repentance, there will be no change.

#5. Set Boundaries

Boundaries indicate where one person ends and the other begins. The fact that this woman is your mother does not give her the right to overstep your boundaries.

Boundaries will look different for each person. For some, learning how to declare their needs is all that is needed. For others, there may be forms of consequences or even avoidance.

The Bible is clearly stated in Romans 12:18: “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” This means you are responsible to do your part and let God do the rest. Amen 🙏

Christian Therapists, we must pray and allow the mind of Christ to be in us today on a level that we have never experienced before. We need godly wisdom, knowledge, understanding, truth, counsel, and the power of God’s might in this hour, for we have been called and ordained in the ministry of reconciliation, deliverance, and the healing of the mind, soul, spirit, and body.

For the Remnant

The Lover of Soul says, " If you belonged to this world, this world's people would love you. They would love you because you would belong with them. But I chose you so that you would be separate from this world's people. You do not belong with them, so they hate you. Remember what I told you: “No servant is more important than his master is.” If they have caused trouble for me, they will also cause trouble for you. But if they have obeyed my message, they will also obey your message. They will do all these things to you because you belong to me". John 15:19-21 EASY

Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. James 4:4 NLT

Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 1 John 2:15 NLT

Remember "this great Dragon—the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, is the one deceiving the whole world. Revelation 12:9 TLB

Whatever direction the world's people are going and doing, don't follow them. The world is influenced by the prince of the air and the deceiver of the world. He is not the Lover of your soul, your Savior, Redeemer, Waymaker, Hightower, Fortress, Lifter of your head, and he definitely did not die for your sins. He is a thief who comes to steal, unalive and destroy you. John 10:10

And you [He made alive when you] were [spiritually] dead and separated from Him because of your transgressions and sins, in which you once walked. You were following the ways of this world [influenced by this present age], in accordance with the prince of the power of the air (Satan), the spirit who is now at work in the disobedient [the unbelieving, who fight against the purposes of God]. Ephesians 2:1-2

Since you are called, chosen, and belong to Lord Jesus, the world will hate you. Lord Jesus says, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. John 15:18-19 NIV

John 17:14-26 reminds you that you are not of this world, even as Jesus is not of the world.

You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. 1 Peter 2:8-10 NKJV

The Lover of your soul is saying, “If you truly want to follow me, you should at once completely disown your own life. And you must be willing to share my cross and experience it as your own, as you continually surrender to my ways. For if you let your life go for my sake and for the sake of the gospel, you will continually experience true life. Mark 8:34-35

We are praying for Dr. James Dobson's family, Focus on the Family Ministries, and the Body of Christ. May the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort us. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4) His death is another loss for the Body of Christ and the world, but his giftings and talents, which remain, will continue to bless us all richly. Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, may the Lord make you ruler over many things in His everlasting Kingdom. (Matthew 25:21)

Today we remember a hero of the faith. Our Founder, Dr. James C. Dobson, passed away this morning. Although we're sorrowful over this loss, we are thankful for his legacy of family ministry that will live on for future generations, and rejoice that he is now in the presence of our Savior.

Helpful information on how to navigate compassion fatigue for Christians who work as Social workers, counselors, therapists, pastors, or anyone else involved in the care and recovery of the traumatized people.

Let me begin by describing compassion fatigue for those who may not be familiar with this phrase. Often or most often you will hear it used by counselors and helpers who work with people who have experienced trauma, and what this phrase compassion fatigue refers to is a reduced feeling of compassion...

Remember what happened when Noah was alive. It will be like that when the Son of Man returns to the earth. In Noah's time, in the days before the flood, people were eating their meals every day. Men married women and women married men. They continued to do all these things until the day that Noah went into his big boat. The people did not know what would happen. Then rain fell for a long time and all these people died in the deep water. When the Son of Man returns, it will happen quickly in the same way. At that time, it will be like this: Two men will be working in a field. God will take one man away, but he will leave the other man behind. Two women will be preparing food together in the same place. God will take one of them away, but he will leave the other woman behind. So you must watch carefully! You do not know the day when your Master will come back. You can be sure about this. The master of a house does not know at what time of night a man would come to rob him. If he knew the time, he would watch his house more carefully. He would not let the robber come into his house and take away his things. So you must also be ready. The Son of Man will come at a time when you are not thinking about it. Matthew 24:37-44 ( EASY)

Happy Mother's Day!

She keeps an eye on everyone in her household, and keeps them all busy and productive.Her children respect and bless her; her husband joins in with words of praise:
“Many women have done wonderful things, but you’ve outclassed them all!”
Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades. The woman to be admired and praised
is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God. Give her everything she deserves! Adorn her life with praises!
