Celebrating Our Black Saints & Heroes: A New Series of Icons for the Chapel of Our Lady of the Heights by Allen Cutler

The Feast of Our Lady of the Heights
We are fast approaching our secondary patronal feast, the Feast of Our Lady of the Heights! We will observe this major Marian feast on Wednesday, June 3rd at 6pm!

For those new to the parish, the feast day of Our Lady of the Heights was instituted in the hopes of furthering racial justice and reconciliation in the Tulsa community and beyond. This memorial feast is celebated on or near the anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre (June 1, 1921) in perpetual remembrance of all those murdered for the color of their skin.

The Parish Church of St. Jerome invites all Catholics to join us in observing the Feast of Our Lady of the Heights on June 1st as we work collaboratively to build a Church Catholic that incarnates the beautiful divine diversity inherent in God’s multi-faceted creation. For in truth, only when we come to terms with our broken pasts can we embrace the shared future God has for us. Only when we embrace one another without bias and qualification can we work together to build “God’s Dominion on earth as it is in heaven.” May the powerful intercession and prophetic example of Our Lady of the Heights guide us on that way and toward that day.

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Heights
It is customary in Catholic, Anglican, and High Lutheran parishes to have a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. Our "Lady Chapel" is dedicated to Our Lady of the Heights. We are excited to announce that this chapel will soon feature a new icon series by resident iconographer Allen Cutler! In addition to new presentations of Our Lady and St. Joseph, the "Heights Series" will feature original icons of our Black Saints and heroes of the Catholic faith!

Over the next several days we will unveil an icon and provide a brief bio and prayer. It is our hope that these saints and heroes of the Catholic faith will join us on our journey to the Feast of Our Lady of the Heights!

St. Pierre Toussaint
"Pierre was born in Haiti and brought to New York City as a slave, where he died a free man. Within the Catholic community, even during his lifetime, Toussaint enjoyed the reputation of an exceptionally devout and charitable person. Every day he attended the 6:00 a.m. Mass in St. Peter's Church, where he was a pewholder for many years. He also raised funds to build the original St. Patrick's Cathedral and St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Pierre donated to various charities, generously assisting blacks and whites in need. He and his wife opened their home to orphans and educated them. The couple also nursed abandoned people who were suffering from yellow fever. Perhaps his favorite charity was St. Patrick's Orphan Asylum, an institution that he often visited. Urged to retire and enjoy the wealth he had accumulated, Pierre responded, “I have enough for myself, but if I stop working I have not enough for others.”

In recognition of Pierre Toussaint's virtuous life, the late Cardinal Terence Cooke introduced Pierre's cause for canonization at the Vatican in 1968. In December 1989, the late Cardinal O'Connor had the remains of Pierre Toussaint transferred from Lower Manhattan to St. Patrick's Cathedral in midtown Manhattan where he is buried as the only lay person, alongside the former Cardinal-Archbishops of New York City. On December 17, 1997, Pope John Paul II declared Pierre Toussaint, Venerable, thus placing him firmly on the road to becoming North America's first black saint." - (Adapted from the biography provided by the Indiana Catholic Conference)

We are currently accepting donations to cover the cost of this icon series. If you would like to donate to this fund, please see Fr. Joshua!

St. Josephine Bakhita

"St. Josephine Bakhita was born in the Darfur region of Sudan in 1869 and was kidnapped by slave traders and enslaved as a child. She was forced to walk barefoot over 600 miles and was sold multiple times to different owners before being sold to an Italian diplomat that took her to Italy; here, she valiantly asserted her freedom with the help of the Cannossian Sisters of Venice. Through her faith, St. Bakhita realized the promise of liberty inherent in the human spirit. She lived out the rest of her life as a Cannossian sister, sharing her empowering testimony of human freedom and dignity.

Following her rescue, she was baptized, received other sacraments, and became a religious sister in 1896. Her enslavement during her childhood were put to good use by sharing her testimony with others and advocating for human freedom and dignity. In October of 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Josephine Bakhita, noting that in this saint, “we find a shining advocate of genuine emancipation."

We are currently seeking donations to cover the cost of these beautiful icons. If you would like to donate to this fund, please see Fr. Joshua.

St. Josephine Bakhita, pray for us!
