Church of The Restoration Unitarian Universalist

Church of The Restoration Unitarian Universalist We believe in the inherent worth and dignity of all. RESTORATION COVENANT: Love is the spirit of this church. Thus do we come into community.

Rising like a phoenix from the ashes of Greenwood and inspired by a vision of social and economic justice for all, we offer a spiritual home based on Unitarian Universalist principles. Our mission is to build a multicultural, multiracial congregation, to promote spiritual growth, and to advocate for racial equity. The quest for truth is its sacrament, and service is its prayer. To dwell together i

n peace. To seek the truth in freedom, to serve humankind in fellowship, to the end that all souls may grow into harmony with the Divine, this we do covenant with one another. Restoration was founded in 1987 for simple reasons: to achieve racial justice and to promote religious freedom. It has always been a multiracial, multiethnic and free thinking bunch of folk who love boundlessly. To our guests and to our congregants, we are glad you are here! Our building is located within the historic boundaries of Historic Greenwood Ave., the foundation of where the African-American community in Tulsa, Oklahoma began. This building was chosen for it’s historical connection to the African-American community. The Variety Club Health Clinic, was established and in 1946, dedicated by a multiethnic group of healthcare providers for the city of Tulsa. Inside our doors, we welcome ALL. In addition to our congregation, we share our space with our community: Greenwood Neighborhood Association, Tulsa Muslim Community, Mennonite Community, Black Artist Collaborating Group, Tulsa Peacehouse Fellowship, The African Ancestral Society and The North Tulsa Historical Society.

Today on this Palm Sunday, Rev. Davis reminded us that we need one another for all of our ups and downs. We must remember that we need each other whole and healthy in mind, body and spirit. He referenced the biblical text of Jesus entering Jerusalem not on a war horse/stallion with ornate dressings nor with great pomp and circumstances. He also reminded us that Jesus was not a King and did not want that title, not even the title of Messiah, his riding into the city on a donkey denotes this understanding of No King and the people greeted him with the waving of palms. Peace and peacefulness, thankfulness and together.

Last Sunday was Loving Boundlessly Sunday, Linda Jenkins gave us her interpretation from “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech delivered by Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 3, 1968. Linda was inspired to look more deeply into that speech and Dr. King's approaching it from the story of the Good Samaritan. She then tied it together with a loving boundlessly connection. Thank you Linda.

Sunday - Feb. 8, 2026, Our Peacebuilding Sunday was speaker was Deborah J. Hunter, who shared excerpts from her soon to be published memoir. Chapter 5 "Integration" was an insightful exploration of her experience during a time in America when strife and struggle was felt across this country, but in Tulsa, Deborah had a teenage experience of self discovery as the writer that she is destined to become. As she recounted what was happening in different parts of the country with reminders of what integration did to this country and what it didn't do in Tulsa was to show itself the same way it looked on T.V. and Deborah's memory reminds us of each individual experience and story is important. She also reminded us of childhood, teenage life and what is happening in the world is not always penatrating to its children in the same way. We look forward to her next chapter and we are grateful for the gifts she has shared.

Rev. Gerald Davis, gave us an insightful expression of unity and goodwill. He told us that while listening to the radio he heard someone say that Kwanzaa was silly and unnecessary, hearing this disturbed him and he gave us a heartfelt expression, a reminder of those principles that are necessary for all of us to remember and for us to find it in ourselves to see and practice these principles everyday. We need to understand that our house is walking and working toward this social harmony. He talked about the ways in which we are being in community. May we bring in a new year understanding that we need each other and continue the good work.

Last Sunday, we were joined by Janell Hartwell, who introduced us to Heba Zagout, a Palestinian mother, educator, and artist. Thank you, Janell, for sharing this important person. Her life was cut short on October 13, 2023. But her art lives on.

The painter and mother was killed by Israeli war strikes over the weekend.
