Fellow Beloveds -

I was talking to a boy who lives at the orphanage in Guatemala yesterday about how there are a lot of differences between the US and Guatemala. Just about everything is different - down to the way ketchup tastes and the texture of ice cream. But one thing is the same. People. People are people no matter where you go. Beloveds who love and hope and dream and fear and hurt.

Thank you for the opportunity to experience the beauty of the people of Guatemala once again - to see their smiles, hear their laughter and receive their hugs.

Because you your generosity, we brought 4 suitcases full of donations for Hope Academy and the orphanage. We also purchased $1000 worth of school supplies for the girls at the school from the Bodegona and a fancy blender for the kitchen.

For the orphanage, we went to Guatemalan Costco and purchased $500 worth of meat they can freeze for meals to come, as well as coffee pots and a shop vac. Wanna know the cherry on top? Another donor provided the Hogar with $1000 to buy a professional mixer for the bakery at the brand new technical school.

You overwhelm me with your compassion, generous spirit and the ways you put love into action. From the bottom of my heart - thank you!!

I’m soooo excited to be home - and can’t wait to see you soon!!

Last week, Pastor Kara was able to visit Hope Academy with Pastor Jacqui from Faith Lutheran Church in Little Rock, AR. She also got to see Anie, whose education FLC supports, and hear an update from her teacher. Anie has had a rough year. Her parents have split up and her older sisters have moved away. But - she is still going to school everyday - a place where she knows she is safe and loved and gaining hope for her future. Our team will visit Anie and the other girls at Hope Academy in just a few weeks!! Please keep Anie and our team in your prayers!

“As we celebrate 250 years of the Declaration of Independence, we can hold gratitude and humility, possibilities and shortcomings. We continue to live in the already and the not-yet.

And we hold fast to the most important promise of all: the presence of God with us, the power of the resurrection of Christ, the accompaniment of the Holy Spirit and the ever-unfolding grace of God.

We celebrate this occasion neither as a perfect nation nor as a perfect church but as a people held in God’s grace and called into community in service to all neighbors and for the sake of the world God so loves.”

Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry

All Together in One Place
America at 250: Holding Gratitude and Humility

ELCA Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry issues his second in a series of monthly messages that continue through the end of this year, titled "All Together in One Place." Each message will share a pastoral word, rooted in Scripture, that witnesses to God's presence today, our rich theological tradition and the social teaching that connects us.

“A Christian is a perfectly FREE Lord of ALL, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful SERVANT of all subject to all.” Martin Luther - Freedom of a Christian.

We are FREED FROM sin to be FREED FOR loving our neighbor, especially those the world pushes to the margins.

“There is nothing that can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 8:38
