MARCH 25- THE FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION
Being somewhat simple myself, I am always awed at simple things that God uses through His church to teach profound lessons.
The Angel, Gabriel, came to Mary 9 months before Christ was born. So, we actually celebrate God becoming flesh today. But, today I want to look a little at the Blessed Mother's, Mary's response.
Most usually The Feast of the Annunciation happens during the Lenten season. During this season we are called to draw closer to God by examining ourselves and disciplining ourselves so that our will is crucified for His will. Basically we are reminded that we must continually kick ourselves off of the throne of our hearts and let Christ rule on the throne of our hearts.
At Gabriel's pronouncement Mary simply replied that she was the handmaid of the Lord and to let things happen according to His will. Of course we know that God used this simple "yes" to work into His plan of salvation.
Mary had nothing to offer God but herself. Don't we all also have ourselves to give. No matter your gifts (or maybe you think the lack of gifts) it can be offered wholly to God.
As we continue our Lenten journey let our fast be a tool to simply help us say. "Lord, let it be according to Your will". God used a simple "nobody " girl from a simple "nowhere " town to help change the course of human history.
Lent isn't about giving up brownies. It's about learning that as our own desires are crucified He will sustain us more than we could imagine. Mary didn't fully know what would happen to her as she gave herself fully to God's will. But, she did know God's goodness even in things she couldn't comprehend. Can't we all use this season to pray, "Lord, all I have to give you is myself. You know all of weaknesses and failings. Still, I give all of myself, a servant, let it be as you will. AMEN."
