November 30 is the feast of St Andrew, disciple of Jesus and brother of Peter. Andrew traveled east on his missionary journeys, possibly reaching as far as present-day Russia. He is considered the founder and the first bishop of the Church of Byzantium, whose apostolic lineage continues in the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. St Andrew is revered in the Eastern Churches in much the same way as Peter is in the western church. Andrew died a martyr, reportedly crucified on an X-shaped cross.

Many people know that Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland—which he never visited—but fewer know that he is also the patron of Greece, Poland, Romania, Ukraine and Russia. We wish our friends in Scotland and the other many countries that honor him a happy and blessed St Andrew’s Day!

For March 28, 2013, Maundy Thursday

God our Father, whose Son our Lord Jesus Christ in a wonderful Sacrament has left us a memorial of his passion: Grant us so to venerate the sacred mysteries of his Body and Blood, that we may ever perceive within ourselves the fruit of his redemption; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
