From Pastor’s Desk: "About Tomorrow."
Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. NKJV
***
It’s not a bad thing to plan. Scripture tells us that before we enter any given project, we should “count the cost” (SEE Luke 14:28-30). There is nothing wrong with trying to gain insight and even foresight pertaining to potentially profitable endeavors. In fact, it’s smart business, and may keep us from downfalls along the way.
The principle here is that we are to plan, but don’t count our chickens before they’re hatched. And, certainly not to boast. Boasting about what tomorrow holds, and all our plans, strategies, and results therein, is foolish at best, simply because there is no guarantee of what tomorrow will bring forth, and, further, if there, indeed, will be a tomorrow.
One certain situation happened in a near-by city some years ago. A man began building a house. A high-dollar, elaborate house. Turns out that he had to build it in stages, due to not having the finance to finish it at one time. One part would be erected, and sit dormant for some time before adding another part. On and on it went, part by part, until it was finally finished, literally taking some years to finish.
I did not know the man personally, but you know how stories spread throughout a community. As bit by bit the house was built, the whole community came to know the plight of the project.
How does boasting pertain? A little while after the house was completely finished, it burned to the ground. Said house was so elaborate, and stood so high that the scenic view of the city itself, and the mountains beyond, and restricted the view to other homes in the neighborhood, sitting to the west of it.
Did I mention that it burned down to the ground? Hmmmm. Just sayin’.
We shouldn’t be boasting about things that may never happen, endeavors that may never come to fruition, dreams that may never be realized, and especially about tomorrow.
One great thing about tomorrow, should we have one, is that while we may not know about tomorrow, we know who holds tomorrow. He knows what it will bring forth, and, as well, knows if we’ll have one!
