From Pastor’s Desk: "Shining and Mixing."

You shall walk (follow the Lord) after the Lord your God and fear Him, and keep His commandments and obey His voice; you shall serve Him and hold fast to Him. Deuteronomy 13:4 NKJV
***
This is the ultimate criterion for spiritual success. Not only spiritual success, but in our daily lives as well.

Many will tell you that we should not mix the spiritual with the mundane. That is a misguided concept, however, because even Jesus used earthly analogies to teach His disciples the morals of His stories, to help them understand the spiritual meaning of them. Suffice it to say He would not have been able to effectively teach them otherwise.

What does that have to with Deuteronomy 13:4? Christians are of the world, but they are in it. We can’t escape that, as long as we are alive. Following the Lord is not limited to spiritual things. It must be considered to be an intricate part of our lives.

Jesus said that we the light of the world and the salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13-16). If we opt to maintain a life of isolation from the world how will we win them? The world recognizes whether we are the light or the salt. By the nature of Christ within, the light shines showing the world Christ. By the same token, we will be unable to “season” the world unless we mix with them, and let them see and taste the savor.

The smallest of lights dispels darkness. Darkness causes a person to stumble around until light pervades it. A pinch of salt can flavor a pot of whatever is being cooked. For example, try setting a container of salt beside a pot of beans as they are cooking and you’ll find the salt didn’t do a very good job of flavoring the beans.

The Amplified Bible enhances the verse: “You shall walk after the Lord your God and you shall fear [and worship] Him [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect], and you shall keep His commandments and you shall listen to His voice, and you shall serve Him, and cling to Him.”

The Living Bible puts it rather simply: “You must never worship any God but Jehovah; obey only his commands and cling to him.”
When we follow the Lord, fear Him, keep His commandments, obey His voice, serve Him, and hold fast to Him, we are lighting and salting the world.

People don’t see the light or taste the salt until the light is shown and/or the salt is mixed in.

From Pastor’s Desk: "Witnesses of Truth."

I am the Lord, and there is no other Savior. 12 Whenever you have thrown away your idols, I have shown you my power. With one word I have saved you. You have seen me do it; you are my witnesses that it is true. Isaiah 43:11-12
***
God has promised to bless His people with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places (SEE Eph. 1:3). Lest we think of that as an automatic thing that happens just because we are His people, we must understand that if we are to ever be receive said blessings, it is a given that we cannot follow after other gods and expect blessings from the True and Living God, Jehovah. In the first place, other gods cannot bless, as they are not alive, thus, they are not equipped to do so.

Heavenly places should give a clue. No other god, even if they were alive, lives in heavenly places. Verse 12 shows when God has shown His power, When you have thrown away your idols. That’s a pretty good indication that He won’t show us His power until we stop relying upon other gods.

It’s no big thing for God to save. He can do it with one word, and He gave the word beforehand. One commentator says, “My prophets have always predicted your deliverances before they took place; and I have fulfilled their words to the uttermost.”[i] Scripture is replete with prophecies and the fulfillment of them.

He delivered them “when you did not worship any idols, and therefore it could not be pretended that you had this knowledge from them.”[ii]

The New Testament Scriptures declare that this is what we, as His people are supposed to be. The power we receive from the infilling of the Holy Spirit enables God’s people to do many thing that would otherwise be impossible. The main thing for which we given power is to be His witnesses: “…you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Malachi 3:6 states, “I am the Lord, I do not change…” His power is always readily accessible. He is always the Savior. We, those of us who have served Him for a while, have seen Him save over and over.

We are witnesses of His great, saving power.

From Pastor’s Desk: "Drink up!"

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; Psalm 63:1
***
Your body uses water in all its cells, organs, and tissues to help regulate its temperature and maintain other bodily functions. Because your body loses water through breathing, sweating, and digestion, it's important to rehydrate by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water.[i]

Experts tell us there are many different ways that water helps the body.[ii] Water can help decrease hunger.[iii] Personal experience has shown that when hunger pains causes your stomach to growl, taking a good, long drink of water can make them subside. In other words, it is not hunger, it is thirst.

As a general rule of thumb, a person can survive without water for about 3 days.[iv]

How many of us have traveled, spiritually, through dry and thirsty lands? Of course, all of us have, some more than others. Comparing the spiritual parallel with the physical, one thing is for certain, according to the data, one cannot live without water, neither physically or spiritually.

Suffice it to say that we should seek God as the Psalmist sought Him, thirsting and longing for Him as we do for water when we find ourselves in those dry and barren times.

Jesus told a woman, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” John 4:13-14 (NKJV).

Nothing else quenches thirst like water. Been there, done that! We try to substitute various drinks to do so, but nothing takes the place of water.

Scripture says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled” (Mat. 5:6 NKJV). Be sure you’re drinking from the right well. Be sure you seek Him early. Be sure you’re seeking for the right thing.

Are you hungry? You might just need a drink! Remember, as data shows, you can survive about 3 weeks without food, but only about 3 days to a week without water.

By the way, water is one the five symbols, or emblems, of the Holy Spirit. Drink up!

From Pastor’s Desk: "About Tomorrow."

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. NKJV
***
It’s not a bad thing to plan. Scripture tells us that before we enter any given project, we should “count the cost” (SEE Luke 14:28-30). There is nothing wrong with trying to gain insight and even foresight pertaining to potentially profitable endeavors. In fact, it’s smart business, and may keep us from downfalls along the way.

The principle here is that we are to plan, but don’t count our chickens before they’re hatched. And, certainly not to boast. Boasting about what tomorrow holds, and all our plans, strategies, and results therein, is foolish at best, simply because there is no guarantee of what tomorrow will bring forth, and, further, if there, indeed, will be a tomorrow.

One certain situation happened in a near-by city some years ago. A man began building a house. A high-dollar, elaborate house. Turns out that he had to build it in stages, due to not having the finance to finish it at one time. One part would be erected, and sit dormant for some time before adding another part. On and on it went, part by part, until it was finally finished, literally taking some years to finish.

I did not know the man personally, but you know how stories spread throughout a community. As bit by bit the house was built, the whole community came to know the plight of the project.
How does boasting pertain? A little while after the house was completely finished, it burned to the ground. Said house was so elaborate, and stood so high that the scenic view of the city itself, and the mountains beyond, and restricted the view to other homes in the neighborhood, sitting to the west of it.

Did I mention that it burned down to the ground? Hmmmm. Just sayin’.

We shouldn’t be boasting about things that may never happen, endeavors that may never come to fruition, dreams that may never be realized, and especially about tomorrow.

One great thing about tomorrow, should we have one, is that while we may not know about tomorrow, we know who holds tomorrow. He knows what it will bring forth, and, as well, knows if we’ll have one!

From Pastor’s Desk: "Eternal Life, Reserved and Kept!"

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead… 1 Peter 1:3
***
Let’s just go ahead and tack on the following verses: 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:

Then, let’s take a look at The Living Bible with all verses: 3 All honor to God, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ; for it is his boundless mercy that has given us the privilege of being born again so that we are now members of God’s own family. Now we live in the hope of eternal life because Christ rose again from the dead.4 And God has reserved for his children the priceless gift of eternal life; it is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. 5 And God, in his mighty power, will make sure that you get there safely to receive it because you are trusting him. It will be yours in that coming last day for all to see.”

What a beautiful concept in verses 4-5:
•If God has reserved it, it’s a done deal.
•If God is keeping it, nothing or no one is going to wrestle it out of His hands.
•In the place where it is kept nothing or no one can cause it to become impure or defiled.
•God has secured our passage to the extent we will safely receive it.
•Why? Because we are trusting in Him.

Now, we can’t stop there! The next verse begins with an almost rhetorical phrase and gives a comparison between here and there:6 So be truly glad! There is wonderful joy ahead, even though the going is rough for a while down here.

Eternal life, reserved and kept by God Himself! Good words to remember when times of worry, anxiety, fear, and doubt beset us!

From Pastor’s Desk: "Good Case for Obedience."

And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. 2 John 1:6
***
The arena of love is not void of hurt, sorrow, grief, pain, anger, mistrust, and the list could go on. It has been said that we hurt the ones we love the most. I suppose there is some truth to that, because something that hurts thrown at us from someone else is not as hurtful as the same thing enacted toward us from a loved one.

A song written by Burt F. Bacharach / Hal David, releasedApril 15, 1965, and made popular by Jackie Deshannon, said to the world the obvious, “What the World Needs Now Is Love.”[[i]]( ) Quite late was that declaration, as Scripture had long ago proclaimed that is the case.

Love does a lot of things that nothing else can. It can overlook faults. It can forgive in the direst of circumstances. It triumphs over hate. It covers all sins (Proverbs 10:12). It goes as far as is needed to restore estranged relationships, and maintain them.

Love is essential in our relationship with God. Why would it not be? He is love (1 John 4:8). “We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren” (1 John 3:14).

The greatest of all commandments is to love God with all our heart, soul, and might (Deuteronomy 6:5 +). The second is like unto the first, that we love each other as we love ourselves (Mark 12:31). Paul said, “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, in this, Thou shalt love the neighbor as thyself” (Galatians 5:14).

Pretty strong case for walking in obedience to His commands!
