Supporting that Idea comes this story about Master emphasizing depth from Mrinalini Mataji....
Master stressed that we should make each moment of meditation count, each moment a communion with God, a communion of our whole being with that Reality.
Once a few of us were with him when he took a period of seclusion in Arizona to work on his writings. Our days were very busy, and one morning I made a special effort to waken myself earlier, before I thought Master would call me, so that I could have a little more time for meditation. It wasn't a very deep meditation, but still I was proud of myself for meditating longer that morning.
However, when I saw Master, he looked at me and said, "You didn't meditate this morning.
I protested, "But Master, I meditated a whole hour."
He replied: "Half an hour should have been enough."
My spiritual pride was crushed! But I pondered this for a while; then understanding came, and I knew what he was saying:
"You meditated an hour, meaning you sat in the meditation posture for an hour, but if you had meditated even half of that time with depth and intensity, you would have gotten twice as much result from your meditation."
I recall also one of the monks, when he met Master in the hallway, very proudly saying to him, "Master, this morning I did three hundred Kriyas" — thinking that Master was going to say, "Oh, you blessed chela, how wonderful; I'm so proud of you!" But Master just kept walking down the hallway, saying very nonchalantly as he passed:
“Three should have been enough."
That is how he stressed the importance of depth in meditation.
