Group Support for Alcoholics, Addicts, and Their Loved Ones
Addiction to any chemical is a deadly disease. Doctors tell us that the true alcoholic or addict has a condition that causes his body to react to alcohol or other drugs in an abnormal way. When he drinks, he experiences a craving for more. His actions are a mystery to his loved ones. He is always trying to learn to use like a “normal” per

son. What he needs to do is stop altogether. Unfortunately, he has developed a mental obsession that makes it difficult for him to avoid thinking about it. Getting high is the method he uses to deal with his emotional discomfort. Life without it seems impossible. This same cycle is repeated in any addiction. We also see it in the behavior of the families of addicts. In order to live free, the addict must make radical changes in his life. Religion is not enough. He has to have a real relationship with God. There are several things that he will have to do if he is to live. We have categorized these things in the Seven Principles described below. The alcoholic and his family should go through these concepts. The Pastor or counselor can use these principles as a guide in counseling. Support groups can take topics from this list as springboards for discussion. These principles are non-negotiable. They apply equally to all types of addictions. Those who refuse at any point will likely get drunk or use again. Definitions:
• Addiction: compulsive need for and use of a habit forming substance (as he**in, ni****ne, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; broadly: persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful (Any substance: Ni****ne, caffeine, sugar……)
• Alcoholism: 1) addiction to alcohol, a depressant drug 2) compulsive use of alcohol in spite of obviously harmful results
• Recovery: The process of restoration following the cessation of a life-controlling habit. This includes changes in thinking, feeling, and acting. It means bringing the life under the control of the Spirit and the Word.
• Support: Encouragement and confrontation provided by a person or persons committed to recovery themselves. It includes praise for successes and loving correction of aberrant thinking and behavior.

7 Principles of Recovery
These are the ingredients in the discipleship process for the addict and his family. They will form the basis for discussion in the group and self-assessment for the individual.

1. Deflation: Admission - Desperation – Willingness
Admission: This is the destruction of the alibi system, a breakdown of denial, and an admission of the need for help. Desperation: This is the end of hope in self-effort and ability. Willingness: The motivation to take difficult action that comes from the awareness that there are no alternatives or compromises.

2. Faith in God: Dependence on God, not self. Prayer and Bible Study.

3. Accountability: Using other people as an external control while internal controls are established.

4. Self-examination: Developing the habit of questioning our own motives and thinking patterns, then correcting areas found lacking.

5. Restitution and restoration: Taking positive steps to right wrongs and restore relationships with other people. Without these steps repentance is a mental exercise, not a spiritual reality.

6. Commitment to ongoing spiritual growth. This means a defined commitment to activities, including church involvement, which enhance and encourage spiritual development. Recovery is a process, not an event.

7. Service to others. You cannot keep that which you do not give away.

The phrase "God loved us first" is based on 1 John 4:19, which states, "We love because he first loved us." This foundational theological concept emphasizes that God's love is a divine initiative, preceding and enabling human love for Him and others, rather than a response to our own actions or perfection. [1, 2, 3]

Key aspects of this concept include:

Divine Initiative: God loved humanity before the world existed and continues to love us despite flaws.

Proof of Love: This love was demonstrated by sending Jesus Christ to die, as explained

in 1 John 4:9-10.

You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.—Isaiah 26:3 NKJV

Source of Our Love: Our capacity to love God is a direct, reflexive response to receiving His love, allowing believers to become "conduits" of that love to others.

Commanded Response: Because God first loved us, we are called to love one another, making love for God and others inseparable, notes 1 John 4:20-21. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]

This truth aims to offer assurance, proving that God's love is unwavering and proactive, often described as a "boundless, undeserved, and sacrificial" force. [1, 2]

Instead of scrutinizing your checklist, focus your attention on My Presence with you. This continual contact with Me will keep you in My Peace.

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

LIGHTING THE DARK PAST

Cling to the thought that, in God's hands, the dark past is the greatest possession you have – the key to life and happiness for others. With it you can avert death and misery for them.
ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 124

No longer is my past an autobiography; it is a reference book to be taken down, opened and shared. Today as I report for duty, the most wonderful picture comes through. For, though this day be dark – as some days must be – the stars will shine even brighter later. My witness that they do shine will be called for in the very near future. All my past will this day be a part of me, because it is the key, not the lock.
Revelation 12:11 NIV
[11] They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.

I will bend like the reed" means choosing to be flexible, adaptable, and resilient in the face of adversity, rather than rigid and prone to breaking. It signifies humbleness, the ability to adapt to difficult situations, and surviving hardships by yielding temporarily rather than resisting stubbornly

Key Meaning and Usage Examples
Adaptability: Rather than fighting against an irresistible force (a "storm" or crisis), the person adapts their plans or attitudes to survive.
Resilience over Force: "In tough times, she could bend like a reed and find solutions," meaning she was flexible rather than stubborn, notes Reverso Dictionary.
Humility in Negotiation: "He learned to bend like a reed in negotiations, making compromises when needed".
Surviving Turbulence: The phrase highlights that, like a reed, one can survive emotional, personal, or professional storms by not breaking under pressure.
Avoiding Rigid Pride: It is the opposite of being like a rigid oak tree that stands firm and falls, emphasizing that flexibility is a greater strength.

Origin
The concept originates from Aesop’s Fable, The Oak and the Reed, where the proud oak breaks in the wind, but the flexible reed survives. It is also found in the Talmud (suggesting being flexible as a reed rather than unyielding as a cedar) and implied in Isaiah 42:3 regarding gentle strength.

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will sn**ch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can sn**ch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

JOHN 10:28–30

I want to not only receive Your bountiful blessings but also take careful note of them—treasuring them and pondering them in my heart as Your mother did, Jesus.

I’m thankful for the countless ways You show up in my life. I like to write down some of these blessings so I can enjoy them again and again. These signs of Your Presence strengthen me and prepare me for whatever difficulties I’ll encounter on the road ahead. Help me to remember that nothing can separate me from Your Love!

In Your conquering Name, Jesus, Amen.

Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life. I’m back home in the house of God for the rest of my life. — Psalm 23:6 MSG

Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.

— Psalm 119:11 NKJV

Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

I Hear His Whisper...

My ways are better.

My child, as long as you have been drawing breath, I have seen your growth in every stage of your development. When you took your first steps, I was as proud as your parent who coaxed you. I have delighted when you discovered new ways to think about things. Who does not take joy in their children who grow into their own?

Yet what brings me even more joy is when you listen to my words of wisdom and heed my advice. They are neither empty nor do they seek to control or hem you in. I see from a different vantage point. My eyes take in every detail and the grand scope of your life as well as how it connects to those around you. I have good, good plans for you. I will not lead you somewhere I have not already gone. I am always with you. Though you cannot comprehend the enormity of my love, it is your covering all the days of your life. Spend time tuning in to my heart today. What you find will elevate your own thinking. Do you want to stay the same, or would you like to venture into new revelations today?

Good Morning

I live my life based on the principles and teachings of my spiritual beliefs. I can then bring this forth into my words and actions as I interact with the people and situations around me. ~Daily Word. ACCEPTANCE WAS THE ANSWER: The physician wasn’t hooked, he thought—… Acceptance was his key to liberation. And acceptance is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing or situation—some fact of my life—unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment… Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God's world by mistake. BB p. 407,417.
“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” ~Ephesians 4:32.

Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.
2 Corinthians 13:5

We are tested in school and sometimes in the workplace. God even tested Israel in the wilderness (Exodus 16:4; 20:20; Deuteronomy 8:2). In general, we have a negative attitude toward being tested—and tend to avoid tests when we can.

The idea of testing ourselves is a unique idea found in Scripture. The apostle Paul exhorted the Corinthian Christians to test themselves, to examine whether they were genuine Christians or not. Why is that important? Because a day is coming when many who profess to be Christians will fall away from the faith when their faith is tested (Matthew 24:10-12; 1 Timothy 4:1). Jesus even said that not all who profess faith in Him will enter the Kingdom of heaven (Matthew 7:21-23). The time to examine the genuineness of one’s faith is before the test comes.

and that He is in you. If you haven’t already, embrace Him as your Lord and Savior today.

We do believe in eternal security, but we do not believe in eternal presumption. Let a man examine himself.

Colossians 3:1-17 NLT
[1] Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. [2] Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. [3] For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. [4] And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory. [5] So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. [6] Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming. [7] You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world. [8] But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. [9] Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. [10] Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him. [11] In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us. [12] Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. [13] Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. [14] Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. [15] And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. [16] Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. [17] And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.
