"The colour of a man’s skin affords no ground for an idea that he should be more deeply oppressed than another." -John Woolman
Society of Friends (Quakers) were a major driving force for equality and the end of slavery in America and Great Britain. In America, Quakers began convincing members to free their slaves as early as 1758. By 1800 you could not be a member in good standing and own slaves.
This passion comes from the freedom we have been given through Jesus Christ our Lord, for salvation was and is based on God’s love for the world. This is why Jesus commands us to go into all the world and make disciples. For salvation for is available for all who believe. Freedom in Christ does not just promise a heavenly freedom after we die, but a life free from the guilt of sin, oppression, and hopelessness. As Christians it is our calling to use whatever power or privilege we have to help and bless others. Freeing others from slavery was, and is one of the most important endeavors we can take up as followers of Christ.
Galatians 5:1
1It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery.
Titus 3:4-8
4But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. 6This is the Spirit He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that, having been justified by His grace, we would become heirs with the hope of eternal life. 8This saying is trustworthy. And I want you to emphasize these things, so that those who have believed God will take care to devote themselves to good deeds. These things are excellent and profitable for the people.
