The ECM at the University of Arizona gathers throughout the week for worship, fellowship, and spiritual growth. Every Sunday in term we meet an hour before sunset to celebrate the Eucharist. Every week students bring friends to local venues where, with the Chaplain, we discuss questions about life, the universe, and everything. Small groups form around specific studies of scripture, theology, and

spiritual practice and meet regularly. Every Friday we take a break to bake our communion bread, and sometimes cookies. We have regular fellowship gatherings to watch movies, play games, and have fun. The Chaplain, Ben Garren, is available throughout the week for one on one discussion with students on issues of religion and life in general. We strive to be an inclusive community that is open to being transformed and transforming others towards a life with Christ.

Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good
things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in
us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth
in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessed Savior, at this hour you hung upon the cross,
stretching out your loving arms: Grant that all the peoples of
the earth may look to you and be saved; for your tender
mercies' sake. Amen.

"Ninguna cosa que de fuera entra en la persona piece hacerla impura; lo que hace impura a una persona es lo que sale de ella." ~Marcos 7:15

What more can we expect of someone who has always gone about their liturgical due diligence? Once we have prayed the Magnificat do we need to have it transform our lives? If we go to confession do we need to then change our hearts? If we can check all the boxes of a job well done, is that not enough?

The value of the religious is to inform the spiritual. We go about ritual so that we can percolate our soul towards a rich enlivening substance for our life and the community around us. If our religious life is not transforming our inner life to cleanliness and virtue then it is serving no purpose. The religious is here to serve our spiritual development and if that is not occurring then the religious becomes to easily a cruelty.
