This is our second-to-last gathering of the year... As sad as that may be, we’ve got a great event coming this Friday! You remember the clergy panel we had back in February about the question of interpreting Scripture? With the Anglican, Eastern Orthodox & Lutheran? Well, we’re running it back! But this time, we have four panelists instead of three! If you have any questions for the panelists, add them to the RSVP. We hope to see you this Friday as we continue wrestling with this topic and hearing the different perspectives from the different parts of the Church!

The semester is winding down soon, which means that things are only... heating up... at GCF. B) This week, we’re opening the floor to any and all questions you might have, including the “hot topics”, and Jason will be engaging with them! His description of the event:
Jason will lead a Q/A session on “Theological Hot Topics”. Any topic or question related to interpreting biblical passages or broader theological interpretations that you have wondered about, wrestled with, or are merely curious to learn more about are fair game. This goal is to hold an open-ended discussion together and to address the issues and questions that those participating bring up. If you are planning to join us, then do describe a topic/question that you would like to be addressed (be specific and succinct as possible). Simply include that in this form by Thursday evening of this week. (There will be a way to submit questions that evening as well, but it is best to include them earlier in the rsvp form.)

The GCF banquet is coming up! It is THREE Fridays from now, May 1st! It will be a potluck, so be thinking about what main, side or dessert you might bring! Sign-ups will come at a later time, but this is something to consider now!

We hope you all had a good... Good Friday, and a blessed Easter! The semester is winding down soon... so finish this last month strong!! This Friday, join us at the Vineyard as Henrey & Addison, evolutionary biologists/ecologists, will be talking about evolution and creation. What does the Bible say about it? What does science say about it? Can the two co-exist? There will be time for Q&A at the end!

In two weeks, join us for some theological hot topics. No question is off the table, so be thinking!

Every year, the Graduate Christian Fellowship takes a break on Good Friday to encourage its members to attend their church’s Good Friday service. Please do so! If you don’t have a church yet, or if your church doesn’t offer one, you can consider going to the Vineyard’s at 7pm! There are usually some GCF members there. Alternatively, feel free to ask around the community to see where others are going, if not the Vineyard.

Join us this week as we gather together to spend an entire night devoted to singing songs and praying together. The night, led by Henrey & Addison, will have a particular focus on confession: the ways we do it & the experiences we can have while doing it.

GCF will NOT be meeting on Good Friday (two Fridays from now, April 3rd)! We encourage you to attend your church’s Good Friday service and be with your church community to observe Holy Week. If your church doesn’t have a service like this, or if you don’t yet have a church community, the Vineyard (VCC) has a Good Friday service you can attend. Some GCF folks tend to gather together for that and have dinner beforehand.

Please RSVP (link in bio) and we will see you there!

Can you hear that? If you listen closely enough, you can hear the sounds of a coming spring break, just around the corner!! Stay strong this last week and then take some much-needed time off to rest! To kick things off, GCF is meeting this Friday for a laid back movie night! What movie, you might be asking? That’s for you to decide! In the RSVP form for this week, you’ll find a question that includes the opportunity to rank the choices of movie. On the ballot:
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
Prince of Egypt
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Looking ahead, after spring break, we have more exciting gatherings planned! March 20th, for example, we’ll be welcoming a faculty guest speaker from the UofA’s Philosophy department. Additionally, March 27th, we’ll have a Prayer & Praise Night!

Also, the leadership team is working on figuring out the date of the fall retreat for next semester! I’ve included a question on the RSVP form that will give you the chance to weigh in.

This week, we’re going to temporarily depart from our usual Friday night rhythms and attend the Hillel Center’s Multi-Faith Shabbat dinner. NOTE THAT MEETING TIME AND PLACE WILL BE DIFFERENT, SEE BELOW.

This week we are coordinating our calendar with a campus wide event, the annual Multi-Faith Shabbat at Hillel Center, on the UA campus. There will be free food and opportunities for inter-faith dialogue, and other activities offered there. This is an opportunity to learn about Judaism, to meet and greet with other students on campus of different religious backgrounds.

When - The event itself will start at 5:30pm, with food served at 6:15pm. GCF students will gather at 5:10pm at the Student Union to walk over to the Hillel Center building.
Where - The Hillel Center (just north of the Student Union)

Please RSVP so the group knows who to wait for when they walk to Hillel Center.

Last week, we had a mini-retreat at the Vineyard! Join us this week as we invite Matthew Montgomery to come and speak on the Hebrew Bible. He will be attending via Zoom, so! If you are unable to make it in-person but are still interested in attending, please send Jason an email at [email protected].

Matthew’s Bio: Matthew is a pastor and scholar of the Hebrew Bible who lives with his wife Angelica in central Indiana. He completed a Master’s in Divinity emphasizing Biblical languages at Regent University in 2022 and a PhD in Hebrew Bible from Trinity College Bristol in 2026. Matthew utilizes rhetorical, compositional, and literary criticism to study the message and meaning of the Hebrew Bible. He is passionate about integrating scholarship with the local church and for the ways in which close readings of the Hebrew Bible can empower the Church to be a just and ethical presence in society. Matthew is involved with interfaith networks in Indianapolis and recently completed his dissertation “Inheritance in the Asaph Psalms: Identifying and Interpreting a Unifying Theme”.
Presentation Topic & Description: Crash Course on the Origin and Nature of the Hebrew Bible
In this presentation, we will cover the complex manuscript history of the Hebrew Bible. This will include looking at both variety and remarkable unity in the ancient textual versions. We will also discuss how ancient people produced texts, how ancient texts continued to grow and be reshaped over time, and how we can discern the message of the final form of the text that has been preserved and handed down to us. After the talk, there will be time for question and response, so please bring your questions; any Bible-related question is fair game.
