Beloved Residency in Church Music and Liturgy

Beloved in the Desert is a service year grounded in Christian Theology and Practice. Not all of our members are Christian but all arrive prepared to participate in Christian worship and formation while meaningfully discerning their own spiritual and religious life. Being situated amidst the Formation Ministries of Saint Philip’s in the Hills allows us to provide a unique opportunity to the young adults who join us for ten months.

This year we are excited to provide a residency in Church Music and Liturgy. At the center of this residency is work with the choirs of Saint Phillips in the Hills as they enrich the worship of the congregation. Alongside this are experiences outside of the parochial norm gathering with the Episcopal Campus Ministry at the University of Arizona and the NightSong Experience. This residency is ideal for those with at least an associate’s or bachelor’s in music performance, or comparable experience, seeking to better understand the role of music within Christian liturgy and may also be appropriate for individuals discerning a call to ordained ministry with similar musical experience.

If you are a young adult, or know a young adult, discerning a call to this work let the know about Beloved in the Desert. Applications are open now at the Episcopal Service Corps website. https://episcopalservicecorps.org

Beloved Residency in Faith Formation

Members of Beloved in the Desert are asked to do the difficult work of learning to not fool themselves, to be a bit more honest about who they are and what they are called to do. This type of learning happens many times in our lives, often without support and when we are unprepared. By taking part in Beloved in the Desert each participant has an opportunity to do this intentionally within a supportive community. This is the type of support that we all need throughout our lives.

The Beloved Residency in Faith Formation provides the space to learn these skills. Working with the Boys and Girls Club this resident gets hours of essential experience with youth in their afterschool program. The other portion of their time is dedicated to the formation ministries at Saint Philip’s in the Hills and the Episcopal Campus Ministry at the University of Arizona. Between work with these programs on Sunday, helping coordinate Mosaic on Wednesdays, and two dedicated projects this Beloved gains experience in formation at every stage of life. This Residency is ideal for those looking to work with children and youth in any environment and especially for those discerning calls to lay and ordained ministry in the church.

If you are a young adult, or know a young adult, discerning a call to this work let the know about Beloved in the Desert. Applications are open now at the Episcopal Service Corps website. https://episcopalservicecorps.org

Mosaic Community Nights are back in action! Mosaic is a regular, midweek gathering for intergenerational fellowship, prayer, and study. Joys of shared meals and shared life with the broader church community at St. Philip's are in full swing and the Beloveds attend and offer insight from their perspectives and lived experience. We are so grateful for their presence and life within the church, and for their service and justice work in the Tucson community!

(of a sort)!

Several of our Beloved in the Desert Alumni who have been in Tucson working and continuing to support the work of BITD over the last few years have spread their wings! First, Sam (BITD '20-'21) is beginning their first year at Yale Divinity School. Second, Alex (BITD '19-'20) is beginning his first year at Virginia Theological Seminary!

And excitedly, Mo (BITD '20-'21) has moved back to Tucson and is working as an Engagement Specialist with True Concord Voices & Orchestra! We are so happy they're back in town!

Prayers of gratitude and excitement and joy are offered for these three, and all our BITD alumni!

This past Sunday the BITD Episcopal Service Corps were commissioned for their service year, renewing their commitment to Christ and to one another as they begin. Read a bit of the service below!
-
David, Hannah, Marcus, and Jeremy, you have journeyed to this community from different communities, bringing with you gifts, skills, experience, and hopes for the future. This year you join us as the Beloved in the Desert community called to live, pray, and serve Christ in the community and each other, together. In your daily tasks, in your prayers, and in your relationships, you are in our prayers for peace, strength, and fortitude in all that you do. Called to serve the students of Imago Dei Middle School, the Boys and Girls Club, and the University of Arizona, to build hope with Habitat for Humanity, and to build bridges with those who are received at the Inn, you will meet Christ in his people.

Will you do all in your power to proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?
Will you do all in your power to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?
Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?

May the Holy Spirit guide and strengthen you, that in this,
and in all things, you may do God’s will in the service of the
kingdom of his Christ. Amen.

In the name of this congregation I commend you to this
work, and pledge you our prayers, encouragement, and
support.

Almighty God, look with favor upon David, Hannah, Marcus, and Jeremy who have
now reaffirmed their commitment to follow Christ and to serve
in his name. Give them courage, patience, and vision; and
strengthen us all in our Christian vocation of witness to the
world, and of service to others; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.

Meet the Beloveds!

Jeremy, Hannah, Marcus, and David have all begun their first week serving at their placement sites! Coming from many different places, they are now living in intentional community, praying together daily, and supporting numerous organizations that contribute to the vibrance and health of Tucson and its people therein. We give great thanks for these four who have committed to a year of service, study, and prayer, and the manifold gifts that they bring to our community!

"He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" Micah 6:8.

The past week has been a busy one as Hannah, Marcus, Jeremy, and David arrived and began to settle into the Sonoran Desert life. These 4 amazing young adults have spent the last week learning much about Tucson, prayer, life at Saint Philip's and beyond, and about the history of the Sonoran Desert. They've met with many different mentors and teachers, including Fr. David Chavez the Canon for Border Ministries, Sister Kate of the Canon Orders of Saint Benedict, and numerous members of our wonderful community who have brought them many meals this past week!

We have also been blessed to have Natalie, a visiting seminarian from the United Kingdom, meet with the Beloveds on many adventures and teach them on topics ranging from Anglican Charism and Practice, and beyond.

Please continue to pray for these 4 amazing young adults and the communities around them!
