Many thanks to the outstanding artists who made our December 7th concert and art exhibit such a wonderful event. Not only did we get to enjoy familiar lessons as well as carols on piano, harp and violin, we also were treated to music played on instruments from East and West Africa - the kora, drums and akogo. Many thanks to Denis Sewanyana whose painting of children playing in the rain now lives on the first wall you see when you step through the door to the fellowship hall. Again, thank you to Chinobe, Denis Sewanyana, Peter Kutt, Mari Hashimoto and Regina Maimone.

Please consider joining us on Saturday, December 7 for a rosary-making workshop at 1:00 p.m. and an Advent concert with three readings from Scripture at 3:00 p.m. There will also be holiday finger foods - both sweet and savory, and an art exhibit featuring work by an artist from WNC, Carl Mascio, and an artist from Uganda, Denis Sewanyana, who works with the outreach program Sewi-Arts, viewable on Facebook.
The workshop will tell you about the Tharseo rosary, which takes its name from a Greek imperative meaning “Take courage,” or “Be of good cheer!” Further details about supplies are on our website goodshepherdtryon.org but know that we’ll have extra beads on hand.
Our concert features a blend of Christmas standards performed by a pianist, a harpist, a violinist and a vocalist, classical pieces both known and less known, and also joyous, ethereal music from Uganda played on traditional instruments, including the kora. Our “African harp” player, Chinobay, is a student of the late great Toumani Diabate. He has toured nationally and internationally, and played with the likes of the Kronos Quartet, Trio Da Kali, and Bela Fleck.
The concert portion is paying, and requires making a reservation at 828 329-2217 because of limited seating in our sanctuary. Know that there are some number of complimentary tickets available if Helene or other events have stressed your current finances. Know you are all welcome to come enjoy a meaning-laden and beautiful start to your season of Advent.

Stan Harris, the Junior Warden of Good Shepherd Church, recently wrote this piece about the time he and his wife Sue Harris spent hosting two godsends from Washington State:

This journey began in Yakima, Washington when my niece Natalie Roberts’ husband Erik was moved by the Lord to come to North Carolina to assist those affected by Helene. Erik and his friend Mike Warren loaded a 30 foot trailer with tools, supplies and equipment, and drove 2600 miles to help in the recovery and restoration of WNC. In addition, Erik spent $1400 for wiring and electrical supplies to restore service to houses and a church in the Sawannanoa area.
While staying with us in Green Creek, we invited them to attend church with us at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Tryon. Mike brought his guitar, praying that he would be asked to play in our church. My wife was also praying for him to want to play. Mike played and sang with our musicians. After Erik and Mike returned to Yakima, Mike wrote and recorded « Little White Church on the Hill. »

There will also be Taize music, and other songs of joy by Mari Hashimoto, violinist for the Carolina Primrose Quartet, and other musicians; soup and muffins; and fifty go-bags of emergency items as well as other comfort/emergency items to choose for yourself.
