Matt and his wife, Stacie, are missions mobilizers for Team Expansion – a missions sending agency that seeks to transform communities of unreached people groups through church planting / disciple making movements. They have been with Team Expansion since 2009 when they joined a new church planting team that went to a Muslim country. They lived in this predominately 99% Muslim country for slightly over 2 years, along with their teenage son, Nick, working to build relationships, friendships, learn the language, love our neighbors and share Jesus. Upon returning from this country to the US at the end of 2012 they began their current role as missions mobilizers at their sending church, Compassion Christian Church in Savannah, Georgia.
Prior to entering a life of ministry and missions, Matt spent the previous 22 years serving in the US Army with 20 of those years as a helicopter pilot. From 1999 to his retirement in 2010 Matt served in the elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) as a MH-47 helicopter flight lead. After the tragedy of 9/11 Matt was deployed numerous times to Afghanistan, Iraq and other parts of the middle-east in support of the war on terror. Matt supported and served alongside our nation’s most elite ground forces- US Army Rangers & Green Berets, US Navy SEALS and other special mission units and government agencies as he would lead combat helicopter assault missions against some of our nation’s biggest threats. Matt deployments totaled close to 40 months on 9 separate deployments and has been involved in many high-profile/high risk missions against our nations enemies.
Matt grew up without a real knowledge of who Jesus was and it was not until his first deployment that he began to hear God speaking to him. In 2003, after a gracious invitation to attend church from his wife upon returning from Iraq, Matt started attending church in May 2003 and gave his life to Christ, being baptized in November of that same year. From there it has been a constant path of learning truth and responding in obedience. When Matt and Stacie began to sense their call to missions/ministry in late 2007 one of the requirements they said was, “we’ll go anywhere God, just not back to the middle-east and working among Muslims.” God took about 2 years but ended up breaking Matt & Stacie’s hearts for the millions upon millions of Muslims around the world who will live and die without ever even having a chance to hear about Jesus when they were presented with an opportunity to join a new church planting team to the Muslim world.
