Ordinations are a joyful milestone for all of us to witness, participate and celebrate. On June 21 we will celebrate our 95th Anniversary with an Episcopal Divine Liturgy with His Grace Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan, Primate. Our Primate will also install Dn. Armen Terjimanian as Deacon-in-Charge and ordain Our Ara Mnatsakanian to the rank of Gisasargavak (Subdeacon) and bestow the minor orders to David Karapetyan and Michael Fomin giving them the rank of Tbir (Acolyte).

Der Arshen, as an epilogue to his wonderful sermon, invited everyone to huddle together as a Christian community just as the apostles did. He distributed the Prayer "To the Holy Spirit" from St. Symeon the new theologian. We read and prayed the following, which because of its focus on experiencing the Holy Spirit, is a wonderful prayer for Pentecost.

Come, true light.
Come, eternal life.
Come, hidden mystery.
Come, treasure without name…
Come, incessant joy.
Come, light unfading.
Come, hope which will save all.
Come, resurrection of the dead.
Come, O powerful one, who fulfills, transforms, and changes
all things by your will alone.
Come, garland never withered…
Come, breath of life, consolation of my lowly heart.
Come, fill us with God’s presence.
Come, make our bodies temples of God.
Come, fill us with power to overcome.
Come, restore the image of God in us.
Come, strengthen our faith.
Come, empower us to speak and work for you in the world.
Come, forgive our sins.
Come, breathe into us the life of God, immortal, everlasting.
Come, Holy Spirit, come.
As the fallow earth craves the rain, so we crave your presence.

AMEN.

Here is a challenge for you. See if you can answer everything.

1. What is this, Hint: It is in our church and it is anointed and it is made out of stone). What is it called?

2. Where exactly is it?

3. Bonus points - Why was it easy to take a picture of it this past Sunday at 1:00 pm or so (for a brief time after badarak was over)?

This Sunday - Memorial Day Weekend Collective Requiem
Once again, on the Memorial Day weekend Sunday (May 24th), we will have collective requiem service for all the departed souls whose names are written in our Memorial Brick Garden. Der Arshen with the altar servers and choir members as well as all the congregation, at the conclusion of Badarak will proceed out of the church and conduct the requiem service outside at the Memorial Brick Garden site, behind the Khachkar monument. Do not miss, and together let us respect the memory of our departed loved ones.

On Sunday May 10, Dr. Khatchig Mouradian lead us on an insightful journey of the trajectories of Armenian communities and gave us a perspective on our Ancestors’ migration.

Equally important, Mouradian gave is the importance of ‘community’ and our appreciating our communities, such as the community we have here at Armenian Church of the Holy Ascension.

Look too at the next photo, the one with a little house on the back of a truck.

Khatchig Mouradian showed us this picture as he does pretty much everywhere he gives a talk.. This is a photo that AP photographer [Sergei Grits] took during the ethnic cleansing of Artsakh. This man is carrying his little home on the back of his truck and is leaving Artsakh.

Mouradian continued: "This reminds us of the Armenian experience: there is war, genocide, economic hardship – people carrying whatever they could on their backs, people carrying their homes, their photographs, their memories on their backs, and leaving their homeland.”

“This picture is sadness and also inspiration: the faith that what this person is carrying on the back of his truck. .. The perspective of the photo gives hope, wherever this man winds up, there will be a community that is going to be accepting hm, and he is going to be a member of that community, and he will be serving that community and hopefully making it richer and brighter”
