A Matter of Health
Sunday, February 2nd, 10:30am
Rev. Brigitte Bechtold
The sermon will look at the ways in which the health of members of a community involves much more than access to health care. It involves access to steady work with a living wage, access to education and decent housing, safety, and free time to take care of necessities such as doctors’ visits.

"Story? Or Stories?"
Sunday, January 26th, 10:30am
Mary Louise Porter
On Sunday January 26, Mary Louise Porter will read a sermon by the Rev. Sandra Fees, included in the January issue of Soul Matters. It is titled “Story? Or Stories?” and the sermon's message is summarized as follows: “I invite you to consider the dangers of the single story. I encourage you to listen to the stories that are being told, to listen for the stories that are not being told, and to notice the stories that are actively being suppressed. Looking around our religious community, our nation, and our globe, we do well to ask who is profiting from the single story. Who profits from the way things are?”

Tell Us A Story
Sunday, January 5th, 10:30am
Rev. Brigitte Bechtold

The sermon will offer a reflection on the danger of a single story, specifically how history is often written by the victors and the powerful, or by those whose literary efforts they sponsor. To wit, William Shakespeare’s writing career was sponsored by Queen Elizabeth I, the last of the Tudor monarchs, and his “histories” strongly reflect that royal patronage. A popular telling and retelling of historical events can obscure what really happened.

How can we learn from such misconceptions and why is it important to examine the evidence surrounding events in our ongoing history and the narratives of our lives?

A Real Comeback Requires Reparation"
Sunday, November 17th, 10:30am
Tommy Airey

American society is caught in a series of out-of-control socio-political and spiritual crises. Structural racism. Climate catastrophe. Collapsing democracy. Gun violence. Homelessness. Addiction. Abuse. Anxiety. Depression. Despair. All of this harm has been perpetuated, across generations, by policies and perspectives scripted by counterfeit supremacy stories based on race, class, gender and sexuality. We are collectively addicted to bogus human hierarchies of value. If this is the root cause, how about we rip a page right out of the 12-step movement? Let’s imagine what it might look like to move past symbolic apologies and make amends – in our interpersonal relationships and our political experiments too! On this continent, our comeback story cannot happen without reparations.

Mending Fences: Repairing Relationships
Wendy Chessin shares a sermon by
Rev. Tess Baumberger
It makes sense then, that in many religious traditions, fall is a time for mending emotional and spiritual fences with both the living and the dead… [and] If we can find the places where our own actions have strained or broken the wires, those are the places where we have the power to act, to mend them. Taking stock of our own actions and holding ourselves accountable for them breaks the victim mentality and gives us powe
