Offerings of Bread and Incense .On Sunday, July 31 st , from 1pm until 3pm, Beth Tephilah
synagogue located on 82 River street will have a hands on
event about the foods and spices of the first and second
Temples in Jerusalem that were destroyed over a
thousand years ago. In these Temples and even in the
Tabernacle during Moses’s time, Incense were burnt on
an altar. The Incense were made with eleven types of
spices into a secret recipe. Participants of the event will be
able to put together some of the spices and burn them on
a replica of the altar of the Temple! The Cohanim (priests)
of the temple also made a type of bread that was placed
on a Table in the Temple. This bread was made for
Shabbat and eaten in the Temple by the Cohanim. The
bread is nothing like what we have today but an attempt
will be made to have all participants make this bread and
sample it. In addition to this, pictures will be shown of how
the kohanim did the sacrifices on the altar. In a related
subject closer to our time, the history of the Kosher
slaughter houses and butchers in Troy will also be
discussed. This event is for ages 12 and older. Admission
is free (donations accepted) and please RSVP if possible
(518)894-3490. Please come to the back door of the Synagogue.
