Holy Spirit Promptings

As he thought about the distance between himself and his wife, he knew that he had been wrong. He’d been unkind and harsh and had said some things he’d regretted. Yet, his next thought was, Didn’t she deserve it, even a little bit?

Is this thought process familiar to you? It’s easy to flip from a sense of remorse to a justification of our thoughts and actions. It’s not always easy to say, “I’m sorry . . .” when we have done wrong, yet this is so essential to rebuilding or strengthening any relationship.

The same is true of us and God. The Holy Spirit often prompts our minds to think about the sins that we commit. Our hearts are moved because of these promptings, but it can be easy to push away that still, small voice as we justify why we acted a certain way. One of the roles of the Holy Spirit is to “ ‘convict the world of sin’ ” (John 16:8, NKJV). What an incredible gift from God (Luke 11:13), for we need such convictions to repair the distance that can creep into our walk with Him!

Read Hosea 6. What specifically do you notice here about how God describes Himself in His appeal for repentance?

Consider the role of the Holy Spirit in the process of grafting us back onto the Vine (John 15:4). “We often sorrow because our evil deeds bring unpleasant consequences to ourselves; but this is not repentance. Real sorrow for sin is the result of the working of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit reveals the ingratitude of the heart that has slighted and grieved the Saviour, and brings us in contrition to the foot of the cross. By every sin Jesus is wounded afresh; . . . we mourn for the sins that have brought anguish upon Him. Such mourning will lead to the renunciation of sin.”—Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 300.

The truth is, we can’t grow in our relationship with God when chosen and cherished sins stand between us and Him. We’ve all fallen short of the glory of God, but we can—and should—repent of our sins when the Holy Spirit brings them into our minds (Eph. 4:30).

When did you last hear a rebuke or a call to repentance? How did you respond? Spend some time right now in prayer, asking God to soften your heart and open your ears to His voice in His Word this week.

A Christ-centered home begins with a God-centered relationship.

🌅 Daily Devotional | June 1
🏡 Eden, the First Home

📖 Scripture
"The Lord God ... made ... a woman, and brought her unto the man.... Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." — Genesis 2:22–24

✨ Reflection
God Himself established the first home in Eden, making marriage one of His earliest gifts to humanity. His design for the family was built on love, unity, and a shared relationship with Him.

Adam and Eve's home was not a palace filled with luxury, but a place filled with God's presence. Their happiness came from walking with their Creator, caring for His creation, and enjoying the blessings He provided.

The simplicity of Eden reminds us that true joy is not found in possessions or status, but in communion with God. When Christ is the center of our homes, peace, purpose, and gratitude flourish.

God also gave Adam and Eve meaningful work. Their labor was a blessing that strengthened their minds, bodies, and characters. As they remained faithful, they continually grew in knowledge, love, and happiness.

💛 Encouragement
No home is perfect, but every home can become a place where God's presence is welcomed. As we follow His principles, He fills our relationships with deeper love, greater wisdom, and lasting joy.

🙏 Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of family and the example of Eden. Help me to build my home upon Your principles and to seek true happiness in fellowship with You. May Your presence bring love, peace, and purpose to every relationship in my life. Amen.

The Temple of God

📖 Scripture
"He died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again." — 2 Corinthians 5:15

✨ Reflection
God created us with purpose, designing every part of our being to reflect His character. Our minds, bodies, and hearts are gifts entrusted to us for His glory.

Because Christ gave His life for us, we are called to live for Him. This includes how we care for our bodies, use our talents, and make daily choices. Every aspect of life becomes an act of worship when surrendered to God.

The Lord desires to dwell within us through His Spirit. As we cooperate with Him, He strengthens our minds, purifies our hearts, and develops a character that reflects Jesus to the world.

💛 Encouragement
No matter where you are in your spiritual journey, God is still shaping His masterpiece. Trust Him, honor Him with your life, and allow His Spirit to make you a living temple of His presence.

🙏 Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for creating me with purpose and redeeming me through Christ. Help me honor You in body, mind, and spirit. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and shape my character to reflect Jesus each day. Amen.

Every day with Christ is an opportunity to rise higher.

Christians to Move Onward and Upward

📖 Scripture
"Be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." — Ephesians 4:23, 24

✨ Reflection
God never intends for His people to remain spiritually stagnant. Through His grace, we can overcome wrong habits, develop Christlike character, and grow daily in holiness. The same God who calls us higher also gives us the strength to rise.

In a world that lowers its standards, believers are called to reflect Jesus in their words, attitudes, and actions. Our lives should point others to Christ and reveal the transforming power of the gospel.

As we surrender to God each day, He renews our minds and shapes our hearts. His truth fills us with light, His love draws us closer, and His Spirit helps us become more like Jesus.

💛 Encouragement
Whatever challenge you face today, God is able to help you overcome it. Keep moving forward in faith. He is leading you onward and upward.

🙏 Prayer
Heavenly Father, renew my mind and transform my heart. Help me to reflect Your character in all I do. Give me strength to overcome every obstacle and continue growing in Your grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Aim for Continual Advancement

📖 Scripture
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” — Proverbs 4:23

✨ Reflection
The Christian life is a journey of continual growth. God calls us to move forward with purpose, even when obstacles, disappointments, and hardships arise. Difficulties are not meant to defeat us, but to strengthen our faith and develop perseverance.

Too often, people spend their lives talking about what they hope to do someday while never taking action. But through God’s strength, we can press forward with courage and determination. When our thoughts are guided by Him, our lives become more disciplined, focused, and fruitful.

No matter your season of life, God can continue to grow your character and deepen your devotion. A heart surrendered to Him will keep advancing in wisdom, faith, and spiritual strength.

💛 Encouragement
Keep moving forward with God. Even small, faithful steps each day lead to lasting spiritual growth.

🙏 Prayer
Lord, help me to keep my heart focused on You. Strengthen me to persevere through every obstacle and continue growing in faith, wisdom, and devotion. Amen.

Mental Culture Gained by Bible Study

📖 Scripture
“By knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” — Proverbs 24:4

✨ Reflection
God never intended for the human mind to remain shallow or stagnant. Just as the body grows stronger through exercise, the mind and soul are strengthened through earnest engagement with His Word. Scripture is not merely a book to glance at occasionally—it is a divine treasury meant to be searched deeply and prayerfully.

The truths of the Bible connect together with perfect harmony. Every promise, prophecy, principle, and story reveals the wisdom of the Infinite Mind. As we study carefully and consistently, God expands our understanding and develops our ability to discern truth from error.

Many minds today are weakened by constant distraction and superficial thinking. But when we spend time meditating on the great realities of eternity, our thoughts are elevated. The Word of God stretches the mind beyond the temporary and anchors it in what is eternal.

Bible study is more than gaining information—it is transformation. The same Word that enlightens the intellect also refines the character and draws the soul closer to Christ. No other study has the power to strengthen the mind and heart like the study of God’s Word.

💛 Encouragement
Every moment spent sincerely studying Scripture is shaping your mind for wisdom, discernment, and deeper communion with God. Stay faithful in the search. Heaven rewards those who hunger for truth.

🙏 Prayer
Lord, awaken in me a deeper love for Your Word. Strengthen my mind and heart through the study of Scripture, and help me seek truth with diligence and humility. Fill my life with the wisdom that comes from knowing You. Amen.

Knowing and Doing

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus talks a lot about relationships—with Him and with one another. He says something very poignant toward the end of His message:

“ ‘Not everyone who says to Me, “Lord, Lord,” shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven’ ” (Matt. 7:21, NKJV).

Jesus explains that some will call out to Him and clearly know about Him without really knowing Him. Of course, seeking knowledge is important, and the Bible tells us that God’s people could be destroyed because of a lack of knowledge of God and because they have rejected their knowledge of Him (Hos. 4:1, 6, 10). We should never downplay the importance of timeless biblical truth. But if such knowledge doesn’t change us and deepen our commitment and our walk with God, it’s of no use.

“ ‘And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent’ ” (John 17:3, NKJV). Jesus stated that the prerequisite of entering heaven is to do the will of God and ultimately to know God—for we can’t do His will without knowing Him. This is the defining factor and a very reasonable expectation. If your children say they love you and usually do what you ask, their actions reveal the depth of their love and respect for you. In the same way, when we love God, we’ll want to do His will, because we know there is nothing better for us to do! Our response to Him, and, ultimately, our obedience to Him as an overflow of our love, show the true nature of our relationship with Him.

Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount by leaving His listeners with a poignant final challenge. What was it? Read Matthew 7:24–29.

When we really hear Jesus’ messages, we can’t help being challenged and changed.

The Law and the Gospel

Jesus Himself explained very powerfully and succinctly what His relationship to the law was.

In Matthew 5:17, 18, what did Jesus say about the law?

In a similar way to how parents’ boundaries for their child reveal what they value, God’s law tells us about His character and what is important to Him. God gave us His law to protect our relationship with Him and with one another, knowing that His law would guide every aspect of our lives as we grow in Him. After all, who hasn’t suffered the terrible consequences of what sin, a violation of the law, has caused to each of us?

Love for Jesus is at the very center of the law. Jesus said, “ ‘If you love me, you will obey my commandments’ ” (John 14:15, NET). When we genuinely love Jesus, we will be naturally compelled to keep His law. When we see His law clearly, we will feel compelled to love Jesus more. And, even more important, always keeping before our eyes a vision of the Cross and Christ’s substitutionary death for us is the best way to foster our love for God.

That’s why the gospel goes hand in hand with the law. That is, however much we believe in the law and in the importance of keeping it, we must always remember that in terms of our legal standing before God, the law only condemns. The law never forgives, never justifies, and never atones. On the contrary, it points out why we need to be forgiven, why we need to be justified, and why we need atonement. That’s why along with the law—even foundational to our understanding of the law—is the gospel, Christ’s death on our behalf, which does for us what the law can never do: justify us before God.

Read the following verses: Romans 3:28, Romans 4:13–16, Galatians 2:16, Galatians 3:13, and Philippians 3:9. What do these verses teach us that can help us, as believers, to keep the law, without becoming legalistic?
