Day 4
Today was our final full day and we honestly had no idea what to expect. We were in the hands of wherever Julie Driskill wanted to take us. We enjoyed waffles and talking to Julie a little bit before we took off from the camp. She taught us the ultimate equation “joy+curiosity+action=momentum.” This was used throughout the day as we started work cleaning one of the houses purchased for the new Bible college. Our time was spent cleaning mainly the kitchens, the windows, the floors, and there was a lot of work to be done outside. We received the wonderful news that the college had officially closed on the deal to buy the building. With that news, we took a break to eat some pizza for lunch (thank you Julie). Since there wasn’t a ton of work left, we were treated to being the first people to tour the official new bible college. The experience of seeing that big, open sanctuary and being able to sing together as a group was truly amazing. We also had a chance to sing and pray in the recreational building. Then we packed up our stuff to go to Quest Youth Development Center. At Quest, we played games, colored, and talked to Julie about some of the work she has been able to do. After some fun, we went back to the camp to chill (nap) and shower. Dinner was burgers and brats (thanks Karen) and then Julie and Krislyn met up with us to have worship at Ellis Park. We had an amazing time singing and talking, while enjoying the peace of the pond and the trees. We came back to camp to hold our own devotional over surrendering to serve. We looked at the verse Matthew 20:28 which explains how Jesus gave up everything he had, including himself, all to save other people. We ended the night with some bonding time by making friendship bracelets.

We got to begin cleaning the house at the new Bible college. What a great opportunity for the students to see the beginning of something new.

Wednesday was a blast.

Day 3
Today was a slower morning, beginning with homemade waffles. A group of four people went to work at a Troy View Church member’s house doing yard work. The rest of the group stayed at the camp to finish up work from Monday and then we went to Troy View. We started setting up for our main event of the day and did some busy work around the church. The main event of the day took place after an amazing lunch (thank you Kent). We hosted a packing event with Lesotho Nutrition Initiative. This was an event that I planned starting in November. LNI sends packaged meals to around 4,000 children suffering from malnutrition in Lesotho. In a normal event with around 25 people and 2 hours, they plan for the group to pack anywhere from 6,000-8,000 meals. In about 2 and a half hours, our lovely group packed 11,972 meals. I was so thankful and shocked by the willingness of our church communities to work and do such a fantastic job. Thank you to everyone (at least one from North Hills, Lawrenceville, Troy View, Brush Creek, and Pleasant Hill) who came to help. After cleaning up, the group was treated to some fun at the Troy Aquatic Park. Dinner was some “late night” chicken nuggets and French fries. Our devotional of the day was about having a true servant’s heart. We used the verse I John 3:18 to explore not just talking about our faith, but showing it in our actions.

Night 2
Day two started off early, with a plan to be ready to leave by 8:15. After a quick breakfast and packing our own lunches, we set course for Matthew 25: Ministries in Blue Ash, Ohio. The adults got registered and then we were given a tour of the volunteer area. The main part of the tour was spent in the Global Village Market. In this area they had multiple rooms staged that showed the aftermath of floods, tornados, and earthquakes. They also showed the situations that some of those less fortunate live in day-to-day, like homeless people living in small huts made of trash. One of the main rooms was a staging of a village/house in Nicaragua. This showed a typical small house that houses 7-9 people, a typical “marketplace,” and the services Matthew 25 offers. After this 30-ish minute tour, we started into work. We had several pallets of used clothes that had been donated. It was our job to sort these clothes into their corresponding bins. We did this job, clearing 6 gaylords of clothes, until lunch. After a quick lunch eating our homemade sandwiches, we then moved onto a different job. The next job was opening new clothes that had been donated. These were in fresh boxes with the tags still on them, so half the job was cutting the tags off and the other was sorting the clothes into their proper bins. Around 4pm, we left and made our way to Newport, Kentucky. In Newport, we had a group walk the Purple People Bridge, while some hung out in some shops. After some chill time, we went to dinner at LaRosa’s. Dinner was absolutely amazing (thanks Chris) and we were treated to ice cream at Young’s (thank you Vickie). We returned to camp and shared our devotional. The devotional was about giving it everything we’ve got. Whether it’s pouring into our passions, serving others, or creating conversations over shared interests. We read I Peter 4:10, James 1:5, Romans 12:3, and Galatians 6:10. Then we ended the night with showers and several rounds of Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza.
