When I invite people to church, one of the more frequent things I hear is something along the lines of, “if I walked inside a church the building would fall down around me.” I always smile and laugh a little but I reassure them that has never happened to anyone and that I don’t see it happening to anyone anytime soon. I then invite them again and tell them not to worry, to come as they are and promise them that it will be ok. Did you know the most often repeated phrase in the Bible is “fear not”? It’s true! Yet I often feel like there is an element of fear that keeps people from taking the step of walking into a sanctuary. There are various reasons for this. Maybe someone has had a bad experience at a church in the past, maybe they have been made to feel unwelcome or judged or that they are somehow not worthy in God’s eyes. I’ve heard all of these things from people and it always makes me sad when I hear it. Admittedly, there are indeed some churches that reinforce these feelings that people have. The reality is, nothing is further from the truth! I often say that churches are NOT country clubs for saints. Anyone who believes otherwise is totally missing the point. On our sign out front, it says our church is the “perfect church for imperfect people.” I’ve left it that way for quite a while because it is something we firmly believe. No matter what has made you hesitate in the past when it comes to walking in to church, we want you to know that Community Church of Troupsburg welcomes you and we would love to have you join us.
