From President Hames in our Alliance stake regarding the passing of our church President and Prophet, Russell M. Nelson :

"As I contemplate the life and ministry of President Russell M. Nelson, I marvel at a man who dedicated and consecrated his entire life to healing…both through his profession as a heart surgeon and through his Apostolic calling.

As the Lord’s Prophet, he traveled the four corners of the Earth bearing witness of Jesus Christ, His restored gospel and the Book of Mormon and our crucial roles in His great work . In doing so, he reminded us we are all Heavenly Father’s children and are loved, seen and known personally by Him.

President Nelson was kind, loving and compassionate to everyone. He embodied all the qualities of our Savior Jesus Christ and he invited all of us to follow our Redeemer in a higher and holier way. Thanks be to God for President Nelson."

For those on earth, Saturday was a day of watching and waiting. For those in the spirit world, it was a day for Christ to visit and teach. 1 Peter chapter 3 teaches us:
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
In the Doctrine and Covenants, we receive more on that teaching to those spirits:
While this vast multitude waited and conversed, rejoicing in the hour of their deliverance from the chains of death, the Son of God appeared, declaring liberty to the captives who had been faithful; And there he preached to them the everlasting gospel, the doctrine of the resurrection and the redemption of mankind from the fall, and from individual sins on conditions of repentance. (Doctrine and Covenants 138:18-19)
On earth, sceptics were watching for a revolution, while believers were watching for His return. It was a day of waiting and hope. We, likewise, have our own days of waiting and hope. In those dark days, we can remember that the light of Resurrection Sunday will come. One of our apostles, Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin explained that hope:
The despair did not linger because on Sunday, the resurrected Lord burst the bonds of death. He ascended from the grave and appeared gloriously triumphant as the Savior of all mankind. And in an instant the eyes that had been filled with ever-flowing tears dried. The lips that had whispered prayers of distress and grief now filled the air with wondrous praise, for Jesus the Christ, the Son of the living God, stood before them as the firstfruits of the Resurrection, the proof that death is merely the beginning of a new and wondrous existence. But I testify to you in the name of the One who conquered death—Sunday will come. In the darkness of our sorrow, Sunday will come. (Joseph B. Wirthlin “Sunday Will Come” October 2006)

On what we know as Good Friday, Christ fulfilled the prophecy in Isaiah, that He would be “brought as a lamb to the slaughter” (Isaiah 53:7). On this day, “we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son” (Romans 5:10). In the midst of such pain and loneliness on this difficult day, Christ reminded us what true forgiveness looks like:
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. (Luke 23:34)
With his disciples, friends, and family waiting with Him at the cross, His mortal ministry was finished. As we read in Luke chapter 23:
And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. (Luke 23:44-46)
We are taught the incredible and awe-inspiring significance of this moment by one of our Latter-day Apostles:
The Savior’s physical suffering guarantees that through his mercy and grace every member of the human family shall be freed from the bonds of death and be resurrected triumphantly from the grave. (Jeffrey R. Holland, “This Do in Remembrance of Me” Oct 1995)
Our first latter-day prophet, Joseph Smith, taught that the events of this Holy Week are central to the Gospel of Christ:
The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it. (Joseph Smith, July 1838, in Elders’ Journal)
Christ’s Atonement, His death, and His resurrection, are not just the foundation of the gospel, but the joy of the gospel.

HOLY WEEK
Palm Sunday: Jesus Christ's Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem

“The sacred events between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday are the story of hosanna and hallelujah. Hosanna is our plea for God to save. Hallelujah expresses our praise to the Lord for the hope of salvation and exaltation. In hosanna and hallelujah we recognize the living Jesus Christ as the heart of Easter.” (Gerrit W. Gong, April 2020)
Join us each day this week as we walk through the events of Holy Week, our Savior’s last week of his mortal ministry. You will receive an email with the day’s message, including a picture and a link to a video.
Today is Palm Sunday, the day of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. It fulfilled the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9,
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation;
In the Gospels we read of the celebration it was as the believers welcomed Jesus into the city as He asserted His divine Kingship:
On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him (John 12:12)
And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. (Mark 11:9-10)
On this holy day of His triumphal entry, do we also welcome and worship Him with joy and gladness, recognizing Him as the One who is mighty to save?
As a stake, we would like to celebrate this Holy Week with you as we grow closer to our Savior Jesus Christ by studying the week leading up to Easter Sunday. We hope that you will share your love and witness of our Redeemer with those around you as you feel His great love for you.
