A number of people have reached out about a key word in the Apostles' Creed as we read it last Sunday in church. For some clarification, and with thanks to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, I wanted to share a brief explanation that I plan to review again briefly this Sunday. In short:
– The word "catholic" relates to the church universal: the one, true church spread throughout the whole world.
– The phrase "holy catholic church" predates the Roman Catholic church and points to the united, worldwide body of all believers across all time and places.
– Many people describe the difference as "little c" catholic (we're part of that) and "Big C" Catholic (not part of that).
We look forward to worshiping the Lord together with you – and the little-c-catholic church – again this Sunday!
The Apostles' Creed, though not written by the apostles, is the oldest creed of the Christian church and is the basis for others that followed.
