Our battles are not “our battles” - they are the Lord’s. He not only will fight them, He WILL be victorious. How can I be so sure? He is the Lord God, it is IMPOSSIBLE for Him to fail.

Psalm 72 say the king WILL deliver the needy & the afflicted. He WILL have compassion & recompense vengeance. He WILL not allow it all to be for nothing.

This old spiritual is such a comfort to think upon. Be still, keep praying, keep waiting, keep singing - why? - we are witnesses to the God who fights our battles!

As I opened my Bible app this morning, Psalm 46:10 was the daily verse. How timely—really, it is what we need daily.

Different versions translate those opening words differently. “Be still” is the most commonly known, but I like this as well: “Cease striving.” Calm down. Be quiet. “And know that I am God.”

Within the deepest recesses of our hearts, or even right on the surface, we have storms of anxiety, doubt, & fear. Moments when our backs are against the wall. Situations that seem dismal & bleak. We see no light at the end of the tunnel.

But just as Moses told the people at the Red Sea to stand still & see the salvation of the Lord, we too are called to trust Him. Be still. Cease striving. Know that He is God! Even when we cannot see what He is doing, we know He is indeed working all things together for our good & His glory.

Again, this old, seldom-sung hymn came to heart:

🎼 Be still, my soul! the Lord is on your side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to your God to order and provide;
In ev’ry change he faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul! your best, your heav’nly friend
Thru’ thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

To guide the future as he has the past;
Your hope, your confidence, let nothing shake;

Have you ever read Scripture & had music just flood your mind with every word? My heart has been overwhelmed by Psalm 72 in this way.

As I read over the entire psalm this morning, I could not help but think of a hymn I love that many people today may have never heard. I can only remember being in one service where it was sung, & I just had to know it. And not just know it for me—I had to know it for Him!

The hymn is “Majestic Sweetness Sits Enthroned.” It is an anthem of praise to our Lord Jesus. He is truly majestic, & His is indeed the sweetest name I know.

Read Psalm 72 with your eyes on the promised King, Jesus, & think on these beautiful words:

🎼 Majestic sweetness sits enthroned
upon the Savior’s brow;
His head with radiant glories crowned,
His lips with grace o’erflow,
His lips with grace o’erflow.

No mortal can with Him compare,
among the sons of men;
fairer is He than all the fair
who fill the heav’nly train,
who fill the heav’nly train.

He saw me plunged in deep distress,
and flew to my relief;
for me He bore the shameful cross,
and carried all my grief,
and carried all my grief.

To Him I owe my life and breath,
and all the joys I have;
He makes me triumph over death,
and saves me from the grave,
and saves me from the grave. 🎼

No mortal king can with Him compare!

As I read over Psalm 72 this morning so many anthems of our great King enter my mind but this is one we do not sing very often any more but I remember singing it much as a child.

As you read this Psalm it is more than just David or Solomon or any other king or potentate - it concerns King Jesus above all. King of kings.

🎼 Crown Him with many crowns
The Lamb upon the throne
Hark How the heav'nly anthems drowns
All music but its own!
Awake, my soul And sing
Of Him Who died for thee
And hail Him as thy matchless King
Thru all eternity🎼

Good morning. Please be in prayer for the clean up efforts as our disaster relief teams mobilize to assist local & national emergency authorities. May God use their efforts to further the Gospel & expand the Kingdom.

This beautiful psalm, which is really a prayer, speaks of the justice, peace, & righteousness desired for the future of Israel. From caring for the poor & needy to overcoming the oppressor, the plea is for God to bless His people with a king who will rule with dignity, honor, & respect.

But there is a desire for this to stretch further—to have a greater impact. Psalm 72:3 speaks of the mountains bringing peace & the hills righteousness. What a picture of a land flourishing under a righteous king! And as the psalm continues, the prayer reaches beyond Israel to all nations. Now that’s a powerful representation.

And this prayer points us to something greater than any earthly king could accomplish. It points us to what the King of glory WILL bring!

Think about it. It was on a hillside that the foundation of this peace was laid. Calvary, the place called Golgotha. It was there King Jesus gave Himself for our sins so that those who trust & believe in Him could be made righteous & have peace with God.

And it will be on the Mount of Olives that He will stand when He returns. The King who gave Himself at Calvary will reign in justice, peace, & righteousness. Every eye will behold Him!

What the psalmist prayed for, King Jesus will bring to fullness. His reign will never end. His righteousness will never fail. And His peace will reach further than any earthly king could ever take it.

There are a lot of things I am ashamed of in my life. Things that many know about. Those that only a few know about. And those that only God knows about. Then there are times when I find myself ashamed because of someone else—their words, actions, or deeds. When I think about these things, they can certainly bring me to silence.

But I am so grateful that there is One whom I will never have reason to be ashamed of. And when I put my trust in Him, I will never be put to shame.

He is faithful & true. He has never failed—not one time. He has always kept His covenants, His promises, & His Word. He stands alone, & there is truly no other besides Him.

My trust in His Gospel? Not ashamed. (Romans 1:16)
My hope in the midst of circumstances & difficulties? Not ashamed. (Isaiah 54:4)
My faith in Him & His ways? Not ashamed. (Romans 10:11)

And so much more!

I love the reminder in the Psalm 34 song that those who look to Him are radiant & will never be ashamed. What a promise!

Today, the things behind us may cause us to hang our heads. But the One before us gives us reason to lift our eyes. Look to Him. Our shame does not have the final word—His grace does!
