Have you ever been so disturbed by a situation in your life that you couldn’t even talk about it? Maybe it made you so angry, so confused, or so overwhelmed that you didn’t even know what to say to God. You just couldn’t understand why it was happening or how it could be happening.

I think we’ve all been there.

Death. Sickness. Marital struggles. Family conflicts. Financial burdens. The list could go on and on. Most of us can put a check mark beside more than one.

David found himself in that place in Psalm 39. His heart was so troubled that he chose silence. He restrained his words and simply existed in the weight of the moment. But like a pot sitting on the fire, his soul began to boil within him. Finally, he poured out his heart before the Lord and arrived at this great truth: “My hope is in You.”

David realized that only God could use even the hardest circumstances to remind him where his true hope was found.

Maybe that’s where you are this morning. If so, remember this: we have no lasting hope apart from Jesus Christ. He is our hope in the middle of the storm, in the middle of the questions, and in the middle of the pain.

He knows your situation. He knows your heart. He knows your thoughts.

So go ahead and give it all to Him.

I pray this at the end of my prayers often because of the deep reality of its truth: “We can only love You because You loved us first.”

John knew the love of Jesus in a way that most never experienced. Not only through salvation as we know it today, but in real time, in the flesh. He walked with Jesus’ love, talked with Jesus’ love, dined with Jesus’ love, and watched Jesus’ love be demonstrated in the most painful way imaginable. John knew the love of God through His Son, Jesus Christ.

As I meditated and prayed this morning, I couldn’t escape the love of God. It seemed as if every verse and every song I know kept rising above every other thought for a moment in time. Just think — if it were not for God, who is love, we would still be looking for love in all the wrong places (yes, Johnny Lee came to mind). But “in this” — in the Gospel — God loved us long before we were ever a blip on the radar of life. In our filthy rags of sin, God loved us. Let that sink in.

And today, no matter where we are in life, God loves us so deeply that through Jesus alone we can now declare our love for Him.

I love this verse from the old hymn. It may be one of the greatest descriptions ever written of the immeasurable love of God:

“Could we with ink the ocean fill,
and were the skies of parchment made,
were ev’ry stalk on earth a quill
and ev’ry man a scribe by trade,
to write the love of God above
would drain the ocean dry;
nor could the scroll contain the whole,
tho’ stretched from sky to sky.”

As we daily repent, we should recognize that our sin has a ripple effect around us. Just as one small act of obedience can be like a pebble dropped in a pond, so can one act of sin. The difference is this: by God’s mercy, sin does not have to leave a lasting effect on those around us.

In Psalm 38, David lays his heart bare before God. He knows his suffering is connected to his sinfulness. He lingered in it too long, and everyone around him could see the effects. Sin is like a splinter left unattended — small and unnoticed at first, but soon the redness spreads and infection sets in. Eventually, everyone notices either the wound or the bandage.

The Lord reminded me this morning that I need the heart posture David shows in verses 13–22. “Lord, I know I have sinned. I know it has affected others. I know the enemy would love to magnify it. But please be merciful.”

David did not need to make excuses or devise a plan to defend himself. He knew from experience that the Lord fights his battles. He knew the Lord would not forsake him.

And the Lord will not forsake you or me.

So when the enemy comes to accuse, we can say with confidence what Michael the archangel declared:

“The Lord rebuke thee.” — Jude 1:9

David’s despair in Psalm 38 is our reality day by day. As we walk through this life, we find ourselves in places of sinfulness more often than not. In our hearts, in our minds, in our members — the flesh is indeed weak. The piercing conviction of the Lord either draws us by the Spirit or pushes us away through the flesh.

In this psalm David has had enough. Yet in 22 verses, we really only need to examine one — the very first. In reality, just the first two words: “O Lord.” What power is found in the heart that longs for God and His mercy. It is not weakness — it is wonder at its best.

David knows that in all his best efforts to shake this gut-wrenching, soul-crushing burden, he must have God and God alone. God’s wrath, burning anger, soul-piercing arrows, and indignation against our sin have all found mercy and grace through our Lord Jesus Christ. For He was made to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God through Him.

Where are you today? Avoiding the confrontation of God? Hiding from His presence? Attempting to endure His conviction? Just stop and cry out like David — “O Lord.”

What a reminder for us all. From small to great, weak to strong, poor to wealthy — if they are in Christ Jesus, their steps are ordered by the Lord.

I like to call them a “Jesus man” or “Jesus woman,” because like Jesus they walk according to the Father’s will — no matter where it leads.

Love this Gospel classic that reminds of this verse:

Trust. Dwell. Delight. Commit.

These action words in the first five verses of Psalm 37 completely surrender our hearts and make us pliable to the will and ways of our God.

When we look at the wicked and wonder how they prosper while the righteous suffer, we are reminded that His ways are not our ways. They are higher, greater, and broader than ours.

And because of these truths, we can do what verse 7 calls us to do: rest in Him.

Trust Him. Dwell with Him. Delight in Him. Commit your way to Him.

Then rest.

These truths from this chorus resonated deeply in my heart this morning as I meditated on God’s Word.

No matter how insignificant I may seem — OUR GOD IS GREATER.

No matter how weak I may be — OUR GOD IS STRONGER.

No matter how low I may feel — GOD, YOU ARE HIGHER THAN ANY OTHER.

No matter how sick I may become — OUR GOD IS HEALER.

No matter how completely powerless I may feel — AWESOME IN POWER IS OUR GOD.

What confidence we have today in OUR GOD!
