“…whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth…” – II Corinthians 12:2

As best as we can tell, this man that Paul spoke about who was “caught up to the third heaven” (II Corinthians 12:2) was Paul himself. However, the apostle reacts to such an event far different than many hucksters often do today. Stories abound of others who say that they have visions or experiences of heaven. Typically, these others make big deals about their experiences as if they are something for folks to trust and for folks to find assurance for life beyond the here and now. However, Paul seems to reveal what our reaction should be to matters such as this. Whether they saw what they thought they saw or not, doesn’t really make much of a difference. Paul wouldn’t even go into detail about what he saw. The problem with visions and revelations is that there is a lot of uncertainty that come with them. This is implied by the apostle’s words here as he couldn’t even tell if he was in the body or not. Therefore, visions and revelations don’t really deserve much of our focus. Instead, our focus ought to be on the word of God.

“O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come.” – Psalm 65:2

I love how our Lord is referred to in this portion of scripture. He is said to be “Thou that hearest prayer”. This aspect of God is one that brings much comfort to the saints of God. Outside of those that may be in earshot of our audible prayers, the Lord is indeed the only One who can hear our prayers. Furthermore, He is definitely the only One that can hear the prayers of our hearts. While there are those that attempt to pray to saints gone by, such a practice is futile and is, quite frankly, dishonoring to God. Why? Because “all flesh” shall come to God with their prayers, not to anyone else. I would certainly agree that there is a place for praying out loud openly before others. However, while such prayer may even be used to the edification of those others that hear it, those prayers must still be directed TO God. One has no business of directing their prayers to anyone else. Praise the Lord that He hears our prayers and that He desires that we come to Him with our prayers!
