Tonight’s testimony meeting is inspired by the following 6/20/16 Sentinel article “The best graduation gift” by Jenny Sawyer
I have a graduation present for you. It’s something I wish someone had given me after I graduated from high school, and especially after college. Instead, I discovered it for myself through my study of Christian Science, and now I’m sharing it with you: The most important thing you can do today, and every day going forward, is to get to know yourself the way God does—as the expression of the infinite. Because when you do, your world opens up.
The expression of the infinite. That’s a big idea to contemplate, so let’s pause on it for a second. What does this mean for your identity? Your purpose? What does it mean when you’re looking for opportunities to use your talents, or just trying to figure out what those talents might be?

The infinite is God, and what I love about contemplating our infinite source is that “infinite” reminds me that God has no limits. Mind, being infinite, expresses itself in fresh, inspired ideas. Soul, being infinite, is a well of joy and artistry that never runs dry. Love, being infinite, never fails to reassure us of our inestimable value.
And these aren’t just comforting thoughts. These facts about God and man are a spiritual law that can be applied to our lives. Whether you think you’ve got your life all figured out, or you’re feeling utterly lost about where to go next, you can lift your thought to the recognition of that law and glimpse something more of the expansiveness of your life and purpose as God-created and God-governed.
Since I was the daughter of the infinite, there couldn’t be any boundaries on my life or on the good God had created me to do.
That’s what I had to do when one of my major post-college plans didn’t pan out. I’d felt led to apply for a writing fellowship that seemed tailor-made for my interests and skills. My application materials had been strong. And the whole thing seemed … honestly, like the perfect fit.
But I didn’t get the fellowship, and I was crushed and confused.
Ultimately, after a lot of prayer, one of the things that broke through to me was that since I was the daughter of the infinite, there couldn’t be any boundaries on my life or on the good God had created me to do. Divine Life was just as expansive now as it had been before I lost the competition. And in embracing this understanding of Life, infinite Life, I could be lifted out of the feelings of loss, limitation, and deprivation that seemed so real and compelling.
Truly wonderful things happened when I took this idea to heart. An idea for a brand-new career direction presented itself, and following that path has brought me so much joy and fulfillment, as well as opportunities to develop new skills and to bless others.
Most of all, praying each day to understand more about the expansiveness of Life, even in some small degree, has helped me begin to break down the walls of mortality. You know—all the things that would try to limit what I have to offer by saying it has to look a certain way, or it can only come in a certain form, or I’m not good enough, and so on. As the daughter of the infinite, I know my purpose and individuality are God-derived and unbounded. So I’m free to discover all that God made me to be.
The best graduation gift I can offer you is to remind you that you’re free to do that, too.
