For the last Sunday after the Epiphany let's honor America's Gospel musical tradition with an A capella rendition of Deep River.

The Wexford Carol is a traditional Irish Christmas carol originating in County Wexford. The lyrics, which are in English, date to the 12th century. As with a lot of music of this period the tune appears to be much older than the lyrics. However, the lyrics are believed to be originally written in the English language. The subject of the carol is the nativity of Jesus Christ. Dara Eckerd Lewis is the soloist.

Lets brush up on our macaronic Middle English with Adam lay ybounden. This anonymous lyric suggests that it dates to the reign of Henry V of England (1387-1422) although the music may be much older. Recent analysis of the dialect within the song points to the tradition of East Anglia and more specifically Norfolk.

Pardon the footsteps in the beginning of this Communion Motet. It was recorded as the Congregation was filing past the choir in the Chancel to receive Holy Communion at the rail. You may also hear a cameo by Fr. Ken Saunders as he makes his way to the Nave.
