⛪ FAITH & FOUNDATIONS: Providence Baptist Church

A church is more than the building where its congregation gathers—and Providence Baptist Church has proven that for more than a century.

Providence was organized in 1916 in the Hatton community of Lawrence County. During the generations that followed, its congregation worshipped in four different church buildings.

One of those buildings was lost to fire in 1981. Although the flames claimed the sanctuary, they didn’t end the congregation’s story. Providence rebuilt, and the church continued serving families throughout the Hatton and Town Creek communities.

In 2016, members celebrated the church’s 100th anniversary by looking back through photographs of former pastors and the four buildings that had housed the congregation. Old quilts, magnolias and kerosene lanterns decorated the fellowship hall for the occasion.

Today, Providence remains active at 6804 County Road 136, carrying forward a story of faith, resilience and rebuilding that began in rural Lawrence County more than a century ago.
