The Interrogatory Creed of Hippolytus Apostolic Tradition, AD 215

Faith That Speaks Its Name

In the baptismal liturgy recorded by Hippolytus, new believers were asked three questions:

“Do you believe in God the Father?” “Do you believe in Christ Jesus the Son?” “Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?”

With each answer — “I believe” — the believer stepped deeper into the life of God.

This creed reminds us that faith is not silent. It speaks. It confesses. It answers God’s call with trust.

Every day, the Spirit invites us to renew this confession — not only with our lips, but with our lives.

Prayer

Holy God, strengthen our confession. Let our “I believe” rise from a heart anchored in Your grace today, tomorrow and forevermore. Amen.

The Creed of the Council of Toledo AD 589

Devotional — The God Who Gives Himself Fully

The Council of Toledo produced a creed that emphasized the unity of the Trinity and the full divinity of the Spirit, including the Western addition of the Filioque (“and the Son”).

This creed reminds us that God gives Himself fully — Father, Son, and Spirit — working together in perfect unity for our salvation.

The Creed of Toledo invites us to marvel at the depth of God’s self‑giving love.

Prayer

Triune God, draw us into the unity of Your love. Let our hearts rest in the fullness of Your grace, today, tomorrow and forevermore . Amen.

The Creed of Jerusalem : Cyril of Jerusalem, AD 350

Rooted in the Story of Salvation

Cyril of Jerusalem prepared new believers for baptism with a creed that rehearsed the whole story of salvation — from the Father’s love, to the Son’s incarnation and resurrection, to the Spirit’s sanctifying work.

This creed teaches us that faith is not a moment but a story — God’s story. We are not saved by ideas, but by the God who acts in history. We are not held by feelings, but by the God who keeps His promises.

The Creed of Jerusalem invites us to root our lives in the great narrative of redemption, where Christ is the center and the Spirit is the guide.

Prayer

Lord, anchor our hearts in the story of Your salvation. Let our lives be shaped by Your truth and filled with Your Spirit, today, tomorrow and forevermore. Amen.

The Creed of Epiphanius of Salamis, AD 374

Devotional — The Spirit Who Is Lord

Epiphanius wrote a creed in Ancoratus that strongly affirmed the deity of the Holy Spirit — “the Lord and Giver of Life.” This was crucial in a time when some denied the Spirit’s divinity.

This creed reminds us that the Spirit is not an influence or force but God Himself — the One who sanctifies, comforts, empowers, and indwells.

To confess the Spirit as Lord is to welcome His work in every part of our lives.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, Lord and Giver of Life, fill us anew. Shape us, empower us, and make us holy, today, tomorrow and forevermore . Amen.

The Creed of Gregory Thaumaturgus (Gregory the Wonderworker, c. AD 270)

Devotional — The Trinity Before the Councils

Gregory Thaumaturgus wrote one of the earliest explicit Trinitarian creeds — long before Nicaea or Constantinople. He confessed the Father unbegotten, the Son begotten, and the Spirit proceeding.

This creed shows us that the Trinity is not a later invention but the earliest Christian experience of God. Believers prayed to the Father, worshiped the Son, and lived by the Spirit. They knew God as communion, love, and eternal fellowship.

Gregory’s confession invites us to worship the Triune God with awe and joy.

Prayer

Holy Trinity, draw us into Your life of love. Let our worship reflect the glory of Father, Son, and Spirit. Amen.

The Creed of Caesarea: Eusebius of Caesarea, AD 325

Devotional — Before the Council, the Church Believed

Before the Council of Nicaea, Eusebius brought with him the Creed of Caesarea — a confession already proclaiming Christ as Lord, Light, and eternal Son.

This creed reminds us that orthodoxy did not begin at Nicaea. The Church already worshiped Jesus as God. The Church already confessed Him as eternal. The Church already knew Him as Savior.

The Creed of Caesarea calls us to remember that our faith is ancient, tested, and rooted in the earliest worship of God’s people.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, eternal Son of the Father, deepen our confidence in the faith once delivered to the saints, today, tomorrow and forevermore Amen.
