Back To The Basics
The Church In Thessalonica
When the first century church was established, there were many Christians who only had the basic fundamentals of how to be a church. The basics are what caused the church to grow like a wildfire and I believe that if the church would get back to those fundamental truths today, the result would be the same.
A great example of a basic and fundamentally converted church was the church in Thessalonica.
We find the establishment of the church in Thessalonica on Paul’s journey in Acts 17.
Acts 17:1-3 17 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” 4 And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.
The Christians at this time understood the most important fundamental of all. They had the right perspective on who Jesus is.
Acts 17:6-7 “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too. 7 Jason has harbored them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king—Jesus.”
Christians in the first century had accepted Jesus as their King!
This commitment caused the world to be turned upside down. The church was growing because Jesus was their king.
When Jesus becomes your king, your whole life will change! Everything from gospel sharing, Bible study, money management, loving your spouse and kids the way God expects, loving your neighbor, how you perform at school or work, standing for what’s right etc. Your priorities will be in order and your spiritual life will grow. In turn, the church will also grow.
The main fundamental that we will see as we examine the church at Thessalonica, is no matter what takes place in their lives, Jesus remains where He belongs, as their king!
Keeping Jesus where He belongs causes exponential church growth!
