“And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire, and after the fire a still small voice.” 1 Kings 19:12

Elijah had two totally different encounters with God. On Mount Carmel, God consumed an entire altar in front of Elijah and the prophets of Baal to show that the Lord alone is God. At Mount Carmel, God revealed Himself in a very physical way. After Jezebel threatened his life, Elijah ran away, and God led him to Mount Horeb. On Horeb, Elijah saw a strong wind, an earthquake, and a fire, but God was not in those. Finally, Elijah heard the still small voice of the Lord.

There will be times in our lives when we have Mount Carmel moments, when God works in very palpable ways, but then we will have Mount Horeb moments, where we may not hear from God at all, or at most, that still small voice. Honestly, we will have more Mount Horeb moments than Mount Carmel moments. The truth is God had something to teach Elijah on both mountains, and God has something to teach us as well.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27

I was a 70’s kid and I grew up in the middle of the CB radio craze. For those under 30, CB stood for citizens band, and everybody had CB radios in their cars and their homes. I remember sitting in my uncles blue and white Gran Torino talking to his buddies on the CB. He even gave me a handle. A handle was a nickname that you used when you talked on the radio; like Bandit, or snowman, or shepherd and lost sheep. The cb had a few k***s. One tunes in the channel that you wanted to listen to, and the other button was called “squelch”, it would allow you to silence the static, and the noise from people talking from too far away to understand. Squelch would allow you to only hear the voices that you were trying to hear. We live in a noisy world, there are so many voices and so much noise fighting for our attention. Sometimes I think we need a squelch k**b; we need to silence the noise and tune into Gods voice. Over and out good buddy.

“Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake.” Psalm 115:1

William Shakespeare said, “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” I don’t know about that, but If life were a stage, where should the spotlight be focused? Should it shine on us, or on God? The psalmist sought to deflect praise from himself, instead directing it towards the Lord. Let us similarly refrain from seeking glory for ourselves. It is time for us to step aside and allow God to take center stage in our lives, To God be the glory!
