“And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire, and after the fire a still small voice.” 1 Kings 19:12
Elijah had two totally different encounters with God. On Mount Carmel, God consumed an entire altar in front of Elijah and the prophets of Baal to show that the Lord alone is God. At Mount Carmel, God revealed Himself in a very physical way. After Jezebel threatened his life, Elijah ran away, and God led him to Mount Horeb. On Horeb, Elijah saw a strong wind, an earthquake, and a fire, but God was not in those. Finally, Elijah heard the still small voice of the Lord.
There will be times in our lives when we have Mount Carmel moments, when God works in very palpable ways, but then we will have Mount Horeb moments, where we may not hear from God at all, or at most, that still small voice. Honestly, we will have more Mount Horeb moments than Mount Carmel moments. The truth is God had something to teach Elijah on both mountains, and God has something to teach us as well.
