When it comes to maintaining historic cemeteries, volunteers are essential. We have an extremely hard-working volunteer who worked to clean up the cemetery this week. He cut grass and weeds and even cut a tree that was leaning over a few of the monuments. We’re very fortunate to have found such a great volunteer!

Some pictures of the cemetery: I stopped by to check on it today. Hopefully we'll get it cut again soon. I was able to uncover one stone which was almost completely buried. This is probably about half of the graves, but the rest of the stones are missing, badly covered, or badly damaged and will require more work to identify.

Update: We have located his gravestone! (See photos in comments)

William Grant died June 16, 1896. Grant is one of a few buried at Routt-Liberty Hill who has been somewhat of a mystery. We have not yet found any family connections to anyone else buried in the cemetery. We have not yet located his grave. The image of his stone was posted on findagrave in 2014. We assume what if we find it, it will be in worse shape now. However, I (Joy Caitlin Monroe) have discovered his file in the the Madison County Records Center. The file included his will and an order form for his headstone. He left all of his possessions to his brother and niece. Hopefully one day we will find what is left of his gravestone.

This obituary was printed in the Huntsville Times on February 15, 1942, and it is one of my (Joy Caitlin Monroe) favorites. In researching the individuals buried at Routt-Liberty Hill, I noticed census records repeatedly showed Jack Johnson living with his brother and his family. Even after his brother Henry died, Jack stayed on the farm with his brother's widow Mary Brooks Johnson and their children. Walking through the cemetery, I noticed Jack's monument is almost identical to his brother and sister-in-law's stones. The only difference in design is the added inscription "Uncle Jack." What a fitting tribute to a man who apparently spent so much of his life looking after his brother's family. (Again, this obituary was accessed on microfilm in the Special Collections department of the downtown branch of Huntsville-Madison County Public Library.)

Mae Belle Walsh Brooks died on April 15, 1934. The following obituary was printed in the Huntsville Times and was accessed on microfilm in the Special Collections Department of the Downtown Huntsville-Madison County Public Library. Mrs. Brooks left behind a husband and five small children. She was buried the following day at Routt-Liberty Hill Cemetery.

We had an awesome couple volunteer to help maintain the cemetery! They spent the weekend clearing the weeds that had grown up over the summer.

This is the monument of Robert Strong, born 20 November 1802 in Goochland County, Virginia, died 22 May 1856 in Madison County, Alabama. He married Lucy James Douglass 15 January 1828 in Madison County. The couple had 9 known children and at least one other possible child. We know the following 6 children are buried at Routt-Liberty Hill Cemetery: Martha Tabb Strong Hereford, Mary Ann Strong Johnson, Lucy James Strong Criner, Susan Strong, Robert Donnel Strong, and Margaret Strong. Sarah James Strong Routt is also buried in the cemetery, and we are almost certain she was a 10th child of Robert and Lucy. We have found a familial connection between Robert and Lucy and almost every other person buried in the cemetery.
