7 THINGS EVERY CATHOLIC SHOULD DO ON THE FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION
Tomorrow, August 15, the Church celebrates one of the greatest Marian solemnities:
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Church teaches that Mary, at the completion of her earthly life, was taken into heavenly glory body and soul.
But how should we personally honour this beautiful feast?
Here are 7 things every Catholic can do on Assumption Day.
1. Attend Holy Mass.
Make Mass the centre of your celebration.
The Assumption is not simply a Marian celebration where we talk about Mary.
At Mass, we worship God, who accomplished great things in Mary and gave her a unique share in the victory of Christ.
If August 15 is a holy day of obligation where you live, your participation in Mass is obligatory.
2. Pray the Rosary in Mary's Honour.
Set aside time to pray the Rosary.
As you pray, don't simply rush through the prayers.
Meditate on Mary's relationship with Jesus and ask her to lead you closer to her Son.
You can especially reflect on the Glorious Mysteries, which direct our hearts toward Christ's Resurrection and the glory of Heaven.
3. Thank God for What He Has Done for Mary.
Take a few moments to pray Mary's own words from the Magnificat:
"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior."
(Luke 1:46-47)
The Assumption ultimately points us toward God's greatness, not merely Mary's privileges.
Thank God for choosing Mary to become the Mother of His Son and for giving her such a unique place in salvation history.
4. Ask Mary to Help You Live for Heaven.
The Assumption reminds us that this world is not our final destination.
Ask Mary to help you detach yourself from whatever is pulling you away from God.
You can simply pray:
"Mary, help me to live my life in such a way that I may one day be with you and your Son in Heaven."
Let the feast become a reminder to examine your priorities.
5. Go to Confession if You Need It.
What better way to honour a feast celebrating heavenly glory than by making your own heart ready for God?
If you are conscious of mortal sin, make a good Confession.
Don't allow shame or fear to keep you away.
Return to God's mercy.
Mary's Assumption reminds us of the glory God desires for His people, and repentance helps us turn our hearts back toward Him.
6. Perform One Act of Charity.
Do something kind for another person.
Visit someone who is lonely.
Help someone who needs assistance.
Feed someone who is hungry.
Forgive someone who has hurt you.
Or simply encourage someone who is struggling.
Mary's greatness was expressed through humble service.
After receiving the message that she would become the Mother of the Saviour, Mary went in haste to serve Elizabeth.
The Assumption should therefore inspire us not only to look toward Heaven, but also to love people here on earth.
7. End the Day With a Prayer to Mary.
Before you sleep, place your day into Mary's hands.
Thank God for the gift of the Assumption.
Ask Mary to pray for your family, your children, your friends, the sick, the dying, and those who have wandered away from God.
And pray especially for the grace of a holy death and eternal life.
You can end with:
"Mary, assumed into Heaven, pray for us and lead us closer to Jesus."
Finally, the Feast of the Assumption is more than a day to admire Mary.
It is a day to look toward Heaven.
Mary's Assumption reminds us that our earthly life has a destination beyond this world.
So tomorrow:
Go to Mass.
Pray the Rosary.
Thank God for Mary.
Ask for Mary's intercession.
Go to Confession if needed.
Perform an act of charity.
And end the day with prayer.
Let the Assumption remind you of something very important:
Heaven is worth living for.
In simple words, on Assumption Day:
1. Attend Holy Mass.
2. Pray the Rosary.
3. Thank God for Mary.
4. Ask Mary to help you live for Heaven.
5. Go to Confession if you need it.
6. Perform an act of charity.
7. End the day with prayer.
Don't let August 15 pass like an ordinary day.
