We are a vibrant spiritual community with a mission to foster spiritual growth and compassionate action here in Toledo. Our outstanding religious education for all ages, helps congregants make informed decisions about their own spiritual journey. The Social Justice group helps focus the good works of our church where it can be the most helpful. Our committee on shared ministry operates to ensure

we are acting in support of our mission and vision. Each congregant is encouraged to find meaningful service opportunities that serve mission and vision. We share our time, talent, and treasure in order to help make the world a better place both internally and externally.

“Many Flowers for Today”

We’re having our annual flower ceremony—this year, on Mothers Day—to celebrate diversity and community and symbolize Unitarian Universalism with a congregation-built bouquet. Bring a flower to church, put it with the others coming in, then during the ceremony take a different flower and carry it home with you. Sunday at 11 am at First Unitarian Church of Toledo, plus a livestream at YouTube.com/.

Sunday Service with David Strickler

Commissioned Lay Minister, David Strickler, will consider two dimensions of the Larger UU Faith. First, we will go deeper into the history of Unitarianism in Europe. In particular, we will learn about the Unitarian connection to Islam that Rev. Dr. Susan Ritchie presents in her book, “Children of the Same God.” Secondly, we will hear about an opportunity to experience a wider view of contemporary UUism. The Central East Region Summer Institute (CERSI) is a multi-generational UU camp that takes place in early July at nearby Oberlin College. While CERSI features activities for all ages, this year’s theme speaker is a particular highlight — Susan Ritchie will speak about “Co-Creating Hope: The Art and Beauty of Resilience”.

Sunday Service - Green Sanctuary with Judy Lee Trautman

One of the things I most appreciate from Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass, is that she braids Western Science knowledge with Indigenous Wisdom. She credits Western Science with keen observation, but she draws from Indigenous Wisdom to encourage better care of our planet home. Indigenous cultures acknowledge the spirituality of all of nature which then motivates their care for Mother Earth. It is wisdom of the heart. We Westerners tend to see ourselves as separate from and above the rest of Nature, but even Western Science acknowledges that we are an intrinsic part of the natural world. We are composed of all the elements. Two of our Unitarian Values are especially connected to this Green Sanctuary Service—Interdependence and Gratitude. May this service motivate us to better acknowledge with Gratitude the Earth’s bountiful gifts and to Reciprocate with more intentional acts of care.

For Sunday, April 12, we invite and encourage you to bring your pets to church for our 11 am service. Bring the pets themselves, pictures of them, or if a child doesn’t have a pet yet a stuffed animal will do. For pets no longer with us, bring keepsakes or something else to represent them. We’ll have a pet blessing ceremony in the sanctuary. And, just in case, we’ll have cleaning supplies on hand. Reverend Tim will preach on being domestic—and on not being so tame—for humans and animals.
