Immediately [Jesus] made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

August 10th became one of the earliest days commemorated in the calendar of Christian Church shortly after the death of Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr in AD 258. Lawrence, born in Spain, made his way to Rome and became appointed chief of the seven deacons. He managed the property and finances of the Church. Thinking that the Christian church held valuable treasurers, the emperor ordered Lawrence to produce the “treasures of the Church. Lawrence brought the poor, whose lives had been touched by Christian charity before the emperor.” (610) For this, Lawrence was jailed and executed by being roasted on a gridiron. Christians have remembered him for this since that time.

Let us pray: “Almighty God, You called Lawrence to be a deacon in Your Church to serve Your saints with deeds of love and You gave him the crown of martyrdom. Give us the same charity of heart that we may fulfill Your love by defending and supporting the poor, that by loving them we may love You with all our hearts; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.” Amen.

Last week, LWML received a very thoughtful letter from Concordia Publishing House and Concordia Gospel Outreach. We would like you all to read their kind words.

Dear Eden,

On behalf of everyone at Concordia Publishing House, thank you for the generous mission grant LWML distributed to support the translation and publishing of Arch Books into five new languages.
Because of LWML’s faithfulness in mission giving, children and families who speak these languages will now have access to the same simple, Gospel-centered storytelling that has shaped generations of Lutherans. That is a gift that will have an impact deeper than any of us will ever fully see. We hope that we can coordinate a time later this fall where LWML and CPH can together visit a recipient of these Arch Books as they are distributed.

It was wonderful to spend time with you and Debbie at the LCMS Synodical Convention last week. The chance to talk with people like you who share the same heart for getting the Gospel into hands and
homes that need it are what we find most meaningful about conventions like these. We were glad to highlight LWML’s grant and the Arch Books program directly to the delegates in our convention
address, because this partnership deserves to be seen and celebrated.

We are deeply grateful for LWML’s continued partnership with CPH and CGO, and we look forward to seeing what comes of this project in the months ahead as the Arch Books begin to reach children. Thank you again for your generosity and for your friendship in the Gospel.
