European cemeteries are vastly different from the ones we are accustomed to in the United States. Instead of buying a plot of land, some cemeteries in Europe merely allow you to rent the space for 20-50 years. Afterward, they remove the bones and place them in an ossuary as seen here in the cemetery in Ryes, France. The land is then rented again for another generation of individuals.

These burial grounds, while different from ours, are just as beautiful and poignant, reminding us that we all one day shall pass.

On the brow of the hill at the back of Old Grounds, Section 16, Lot 20 lie the members of the Gilmore family. Captain Abraham Gilmore and his wife Mary Sellars had 11 children and many are buried in the family plot. Abraham was a Great Lakes sailor and arrived in Toledo in 1837. He also operated a drydock and ship building company.

Katherine “Kate” Gilmore was born to Abraham and Mary on October 20, 1861. Kate was hired as a teacher in Toledo Public Schools in 1888 and by 1900 was principal of Ironville School making $650 a year. She lived at 1643 Summit almost directly next to where the TPS board of education is housed today. Ironville School opened in 1873 at Millard Avenue and Tiffin Streets and the name was changed to Irving School in 1917 and rebuilt. The school closed in 1962 and was torn down.

Kate later resided at 2130 Scottwood in the Old West End and transferred as principal to Segur School. Segur was located at the corner of Segur and Maumee avenues and opened in 1890. The school has also been demolished. Kate spent 45 years working for TPS.

Ms. Gilmore never married and died on February 19, 1935. We love looking at her youthful photo and puffy sleeves.

Michaels Bar & Grill, operated by the Yakumithis family, has been a downtown Toledo staple for years serving homemade food and offering breakfast all day long.

Emmanuel and Minnie Yakumithis first opened the Baltimore Cafe downtown in 1922 and it served as a key gathering spot. In 1945, the cafe moved to its current location at 901 Monroe Street in a castle-like building which was constructed in 1897. The structure once housed Fred’s Karate School.

The restaurant closed in 1987 for one month to completely reinvent the space and it reopened as Michael's Bar & Grill. Michael Yakumithis, son of Emmanuel and Minnie, ran the restaurant for years until his own sons, George and John, continued operating the business.

Emmanuel Yakumithis was born in 1890 in Greece. He immigrated to the United States in 1912 and married Minnie in Monroe, Michigan in 1920. Emmanuel passed away on May 28, 1978 and was buried in Section X3, Lot 42. Minnie lived until 1997 and was laid to rest next to her husband. Their sons John, who died at age 45, and Karl, who died at age 53, are also buried in the Yakumithis plot. Michael passed away in 2021 and was interred in the same lot.
