Pentecost was a Jewish harvest festival that marked the fiftieth day after Passover. Luke portrays the Holy Spirit being poured out upon the disciples before the gathered and astonished people assembled in Jerusalem for the festival. Filled with the Spirit, the disciples were able to witness to the power of Christ’s resurrection.

The 2026 theme for the Northwestern Ohio Synod is the Way of Love, which is the Way of Jesus.

In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus shares the Greatest Commandment. “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

This Sunday, we welcome Calla Gilson Burns - Director of Community & Global Engagement for the Northwestern Ohio Synod, ELCA.

Calla coordinates discipleship initiatives for our synod and supports the work of parishes to care for their neighbors. In addition, Calla coordinates some grant opportunities including grants for campus ministries and Imagining Renewal microgrants.

O God, you gave your only Son to suffer death on the cross for our redemption, and by His glorious resurrection you delivered us from the power of death. Make us die every day to sin, that we may live with Him forever in the joy of the resurrection, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
