Everything that happens after Job loses everything is people trying to explain it to him, and every one of them is wrong.

God says so himself at the end of the book. He is angrier at the explanations Job’s friends offered than at anything Job said while he was grieving. Job never does get told why it happened.

If you are in the middle of your own version of this and people keep handing you reasons, you are allowed to not take any of them.

Forgiving somebody is not a thing you do once.

Pastor David had people he trusted working against him behind closed doors, and it took months of praying about it every day, sometimes several times a day. Years on it still comes back, and when it does he still has to say it out loud. That isn’t a sign the forgiveness didn’t take. For most people, most of the time, that is what forgiveness actually looks like.

If you’ve been carrying something like that and assumed you were doing it wrong because it keeps returning, you aren’t doing it wrong.

Us four and no more. Somebody meant it as a joke once and it stuck because it’s accurate.

Nobody in a church has ever walked up to a visitor and told them they don’t belong. That isn’t how it happens. It happens in who gets spoken to after the service and who ends up standing by themselves, in the conversation that doesn’t quite open up to let somebody in, in a hundred small things nobody would ever put into words. The person on the receiving end understands all of it perfectly.

We preach that the love of Jesus is for everyone. People believe our behavior, not our preaching. If that’s been your experience here or anywhere else, we’re sorry, and we would rather hear about it than not.

He was asking for permission to leave. He never got it.

Pastor David didn’t want to speak for God, so he said nothing for a year while a friend got ground down to nothing. He’s thought about that silence a long time since. Sometimes the most damaging thing a Christian friend can do is be careful.

If somebody in your life is asking you a question like that right now, don’t be careful. Be honest.

Relationships are hard, family is hard, and sometimes a church family can be even harder. When we experience the deep pain of abandonment or betrayal from those we trusted most, it can make us want to walk away from the church and the faith entirely.

By week three, nobody is checking in anymore.

We are good at the funeral. We are decent at the graveside. Then everyone goes back to their own lives and the person left behind is standing in exactly the same place, except now the house is quiet and the casseroles have stopped. Mourning runs on months and years, not on a week, and the people inside it usually stop mentioning it because everyone else has obviously moved on.

If you know someone who lost somebody this year, this is the week to text them about it. Not on the anniversary. This week.
