Scripture:

1 Corinthians 4:16 – “Therefore I exhort you, be imitators of me.” (NASB)

Observation:

Growing up I loved playing it; so when I became a father, I couldn’t wait to play it with my children. It was simple game, no board, no pieces to move around, nothing but your voice. The game was called “Simon Says,” where the leader would say things to do like: “touch your nose” or “put your hands on your hips.” If the leader didn’t say “Simon Says” first, you didn’t have to do it, but if they did, you had to! The object was to be the last person standing. If you messed up, you were out! Today’s verse speaks of being exhorted by Paul, to be imitators of him - who was an imitator of Christ. And like the game of “Simon Says,” if we don’t follow His lead, we will be “out.” I know people struggle with that and say that all of us will go to heaven. Well, that’s not scriptural. We need to play by the rules. So, who are you imitating in your life?

Scripture:

1 John 3:18 – “Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.” (NASB)

Observation:

I remember back in high school taking a class on media and the different forms… newspapers, radio, and television and about subtle images. A subliminal message was sent back in the 70’s. Many of the so called “tricks of the trade” have been outlawed today, but we can see even greater things happening. As I watch television today, I look to see how men are portrayed. We no longer are the bread winners or the fixers of our homes. No, we are left to sit upon the couch watching TV, playing video games, spending more time with sports than our responsibilities as a man, and not much given to helping our families let alone our society. If we were to take a serious look at the reality of men in real life, we begin to find an amazing similarity. We have, through time, become exactly what has been subliminally sent our way. If you watch real close, you can begin to see things like homosexuality, adultery, laziness, gluttony, etc. being increased as OK. Well, that’s just not true. We are allowing the media to tell us what is right or acceptable, and we have spent more time learning that than God’s Word. If you were to ask a teenager to quote a scripture most would not be able to, but if you ask them who won American Idol last year, they would all know. Garbage in, garbage out! And that goes for us men as well, are we spending more time in the world or in the Word?

Scripture:

Proverbs 1:5 – “A wise man will hear and increase in learning and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel…” (NASB)

Observation:

"Yes, I saw the sign but didn't follow it!" While loading a young man into the ambulance, the police officer asked if he saw the sign. He replied that he had, but he didn't follow it. It was a detour sign that was posted on the road directing traffic away from a dangerous place. The young man had seen the sign but didn't follow where it led. He was involved in an accident and was hurt in the process. Today's verse states that a wise man will hear and increase learning and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel. I can't help but think of a few wise men that we all have heard of this time of year, men who had seen a sign and followed where it led. If we see the sign during this season of His birth, will we follow where it is leading? Will we become wise men in finding the Savior of the World, or will we, like the young driver, miss the sign and end up in a bad situation? Let's not miss His sign this season. Follow the star to our Savior's birth! It will truly bring new life and lead us to a greater understanding of this thing called life.

Scripture:

Hebrews 13:8 – “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (NASB)

Observation:

It's hard to drive by it. It's just not the same! I hold in my heart some great memories of times gone by like staying overnight with my dad on a fishing trip. Sadly, the motel where we stayed has turned into a storage unit. We had some wonderful times there, cleaning fish, trading stories with some other fisherman who stayed there. It is a great memory, but things change in life, they don't always stay the same and some changes are painful to go through. Some changes we go through bring back memories of things we wish we could hold on to forever. How we wish we could keep them from changing. Today's verse speaks of someone who has never changed and never will - Jesus Christ! He is the same yesterday, today, and forever! What a wonderful thought. We don't have to go through any pain of wishing things were the same. He is the same. He is there for us every moment of our lives. Don't let this season go without coming to know the never changing Jesus. He is someone we can hold on to forever!

Scripture:

Acts 20:35 – “…In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (NASB)

Observation:

I couldn't wait for the day to get here, and neither could my eldest daughter. There are a few days that stood out in my mind during my career as a firefighter. No, it wasn't the day I helped rescue someone, or put out a fire, or helped deliver a baby. While those were some great memories, the day that stands out the most was Zoo Day. It was the day we would take the mentally and physically challenged children to the zoo. I was blessed to bring along my eldest daughter to help wheel some of the children around. The smiles on the children's faces as we talked and watched the animals was priceless. Today's verse shares that in working hard, we must help the weak and remember it is more blessed to give than receive. My daughter and I came away blessed by the time spent with those children: the laughter, the smiles warmed our hearts, and the thought of how blessed I was to walk back to our car hand in hand with my healthy daughter was something I'll never forget. So as we enter the "giving" season, let's remember that it is truly more blessed to give than receive. Rather than look what's on our gift list, we could look to see who is on our giving list.

Scripture:

Proverbs 2:2 – “Make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding.” (NASB)

Observation:

It took a long time, but I finally understood. Living with four women, a wife and three daughters, has taught me a thing or two. Most men like to fix things, if we see a problem or hear a problem, our first instinct is to try and fix it. So when one of my daughters or my wife begins to share a problem, my first reaction is to try and fix it. That has lead me into some pretty deep trouble. You see, over the years I have learned that what they really need me to do is just listen not try to fix it, but try to understand what they are sharing. Today's verse is a great verse to remember for us men, "make our ears attentive to wisdom and incline our hearts to understanding!" Rather than try to fix my daughters’ problems, I learned to listen, to hear exactly what they were saying, and to be sympathetic to what they were trying to relate to me. Then and only then, that's when they ask me to try and help or fix it, but only if they ask. I have learned to be attentive to their wisdom about the situation, and in doing so have learned to understand them better. Maybe you have been trying to fix "that" problem instead of just listening and showing compassion for someone else's problems. Maybe that's why God gave us two ears and one mouth...to listen twice as much as speaking.

Scripture:

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” (NASB)

Observation:

I rebuilt the carb, changed the gas, replaced the spark plugs, and yet it still wouldn’t run. While tuning up an old tiller, I had done everything I thought possible to get the machine to run. After many attempts to get the tiller to show some kind of life, I had to go back to the manual and reread some of the material. After checking the manual, I went back to the machine and tweaked this and that and then it came back to life. Today's verse speaks of God's Word or His Manual for our life on this earth (and even after this life), but sometimes we forget to check His Manual regarding how best to get our walk back to life, back to really living for what's important. Sure we go on like we are, but maybe, just maybe, if we checked His Manual, we will find those things in our life that need a little tweaking or maybe a lot of tweaking. We'll never know unless we go to His Manual. So when was the last time you spent time in His Manual?

Scripture:

Philippians 1:11 – “Having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” (NASB)

Observation:

When I framed houses and had to build walls, we had to make sure they were square. So we went to the standard rule that says: 3 feet on one side, and 4 feet on the other would equal 5 feet across both points. It was and is called the 3,4,5 rule (for those who like big words it’s the Pythagorean Theorem). You may be asking what this has to do with today’s reading? Well the verse states that having been filled with the fruit of righteousness in order for the house to be right: the walls need to be straight, the windows level, the doors plumb, etc., and that kind of righteousness in our own lives comes through Jesus Christ. The rule we need to use is Jesus – plain and simple – no big formulas or equations, just Jesus. Do we measure up? What theorem are we using as a standard so our house can be on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ? Anything less than Him and our house will not be square!

Scripture:

Hebrews 4:15-16 “For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (NASB)

Observation:

Spending time with the local Teen Challenge men, the topic of how much we had in common with each other came up. Teen Challenge is a substance abuse recovery program focusing on Christ and the healings from addiction. As we end the week of addiction victory, we find today’s scripture sharing that we do not have a high priest (Jesus) who cannot sympathize with our weakness. I am sure that Christ didn’t have any addictions, but the verse goes on to share that he was tempted in all things as we are. The more we shared at the Teen Challenge breakfast, the more “in common” things we found. Men with addictions come from all types of backgrounds and all types of lifestyles but we can draw near with confidence to the throne of grace because of Jesus Christ and to each other to help us find the addiction victory in Christ.

Scripture:

James 1:2-3 “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.” (NASB)

Observation:

He was overjoyed, said he was the happiest he had been in years! As we come close to finishing the week of Addiction Victory, we come upon the verse in His Word relating to the joy found as we encounter various trials and that the testing of our faith producing endurance. Pete couldn’t help but share the joy he found as he related what happened to him over the weekend. Pete struggled with alcohol and weekends were his worst time, but this weekend Pete found victory over his addiction by spending the weekend on a short-term mission trip with his men’s group. He related how he never had a thought about drinking as he spent time helping family after family deal with the clean-up from a recent flood. Not only that, but he shared that he found another man who struggled with the same addiction and with his new-found friend had agreed to hold each other accountable. As he shared his joy, I couldn’t help but think of today’s verse!

Scripture:

Titus 2:12 “…instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age…” (NASB)

Observation:

It’s Day 5 of Victory Over Addiction and I pray that our journey is leading us to where we find the Victory is in Christ and other godly brothers! I remember looking in the mirror and asking myself, “How would I feel if someone else spoke to my wife that way?” My addiction to anger had taken over my life and if I wanted the victory found in Christ, I had to admit a few things about myself. I needed to look in that mirror and be honest with where I was as a man. Today’s verse speaks about changing our lifestyle from one of addiction to the world to one of living a godly life. My actions, my addiction, was not bringing God glory or sharing the love of Christ with others. To win the total victory, we will have to change a few things in our life, change our way of thinking, change the group we hang out with, change our behavioral habits and begin to live as Christ.

Scripture:

1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you, but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.” (NASB)

Observation:

The craving was overwhelming, but there was also opportunity to say NO. Everywhere he turned, there was opportunity to either sin or walk in the Victory of Christ! As we start Day 4 of Victory Over Addiction, we see a verse that teaches us we are not alone! Sitting at the Saturday morning men’s breakfast, the topic came up about fighting addictions alone. One man shared that although he knew he had Christ in his corner, he felt like he was the only one going through his temptations. Not until other men began to share their stories did the man feel that all men face some sort of temptation. The more the men shared, the more the man felt as if God was giving him the escape path he needed (the second part of today’s verse!)

Application:

Personal Application: Take time to read today’s verse slowly and meditate upon the fact that you are not alone in the fight for addiction victory. Don’t go it alone but reach out to a godly friend today and be honest with where you are in facing temptation.
Family Devotional: Read this verse to your family. Ask them if anything spoke to them as you read. Talk about their answers and show them that one important aspect of this chapter is that we must continue to spend time with the Lord and keep our hearts focused on His plans and purposes. Pray for them
