❤️‍🔥 June is the Month of the Sacred Heart ❤️‍🔥
Sacred Heart Novena begins TODAY!

Pope Leo XIV invites us to pray "that each one of us might find consolation in a personal relationship with Jesus, and from His Heart, learn to have compassion on the world."

Beginning today, June 3, through June 11, we invite you to join parishes across the country in the Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, nine days of prayer, reflection, and action, concluding with the Consecration of the United States to the Sacred Heart.

Find the full novena guide at usccb.org/weholdthesetruths.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us! ❤️‍🔥

Five Things to Know About First Saturdays

The devotion of the Five First Saturdays is a beautiful Catholic tradition connected to the message of Fatima and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Here are five important things every Catholic should know:

1. The devotion began with Our Lady’s request to Sister Lucia.
On December 10, 1925, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Sister Lucia, one of the Fatima visionaries, and asked for the practice of Five First Saturdays as an act of reparation to her Immaculate Heart.

2. The devotion is completed over five consecutive months.
The “five Saturdays” correspond to five types of offenses committed against the Blessed Mother, including attacks on her Immaculate Conception, perpetual virginity, divine motherhood, and disrespect toward her sacred images.

3. Four acts are required each First Saturday.
To fulfill the devotion, Catholics are asked to: Go to Confession (within about eight days before or after), Receive Holy Communion, Pray five decades of the Rosary, and Spend 15 minutes meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, all with the intention of making reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

4. Our Lady attached a special promise to this devotion.
Mary promised to assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation those who faithfully complete the devotion with sincere hearts and the proper intention.

5. First Saturdays lead us closer to Jesus through Mary.
This devotion is not simply a routine prayer practice; it is a call to repentance, deeper prayer, and greater love for Christ. Through frequent confession, the Eucharist, the Rosary, and meditation, Catholics grow in holiness and strengthen their relationship with Jesus through the intercession of His Blessed Mother.

May we answer Our Lady’s invitation with faithful hearts and renewed devotion.

Invitation to Priestly Ordination and Sung Vespers

Please join us next Saturday, May 30 at 11:00 a.m., when Bishop Doherty will celebrate the Rite of Ordination at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception (1212 South Street, Lafayette, IN 47901), as Rev. Mr. Jacob Miller will be ordained a priest for our diocese.

You may also join us for Candlelight Vespers, with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, on the eve of Priesthood Ordination as we pray Vespers for Vocations. This will take place on Friday, May 29 at 7:00 pm, at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Lafayette. Choirs from Guerin Catholic and Central Catholic High Schools will be present, along with members of the Knights of the Holy Temple from throughout the Diocese will be serving, for this solemn occasion.

If you’re unable to join us, please continue praying for vocations to Holy Orders, as it will be another 4-5 years before more men are ordained for our diocese! Please also help me in inviting young men from our pastorate community to committing their lives to serving Christ and His Church. It’s a beautiful vocation and the need for priests is growing.

“The Church finds Christ’s ‘Follow Me’ at the beginning of every call to service in the ministerial priesthood, which simultaneously – in the Catholic Church of the Latin rite – is linked to the conscious and free choice of celibacy . . . If such a call comes into your heart, do not silence it! Let it develop into the maturity of a vocation. Respond to it through prayer and fidelity to the commandments! For ‘the harvest is plentiful’ and there is an enormous need for many to be reached by Christ’s call, ‘Follow me.’ There is an enormous need for priests according to the heart of God – and the Church in the world of today has an enormous need of the witness of a life given without reserve to God: the witness of that nuptial love of Christ himself which, in a particular way, will make the Kingdom of God present among people and bring it near to the world.” ~ St. John Paul II to the Youth of the World, International Youth Year (March 31, 1985)

On Sunday, April 19, Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish in Carmel saw a magnificent choral collaboration from the elite Purdue Chamber Choir, three choirs from Guerin Catholic High School (Ambrose Men’s Choir, Cecilia Women’s Choir and Sounds of Providence) and the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Pueri Cantores Children’s Choir. The five choirs each performed a set on their own, singing high-level choral works in English, Latin, Russian, German and Italian. Finally, all the choirs, over 120 voices strong, capped off the evening with a magnificent setting of the hymn "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty," prompting the audience of about 350 to respond with a thunderous standing ovation. This marks the second year of this three-way collaboration, and plans are already underway to keep the tradition going.

Stretching My Legs: Serving Our Lord

For years I’ve heard about and been interested in serving as a chaplain for COR Expeditions. I learned about this opportunity years ago, while visiting Wyoming Catholic College on my way to climb Granite Peak. And this week, May 20-26, I will be accompanying a group of college students in the wilderness of Moab!

As their website (https://www.corexpeditions.org) explains, “COR stands for 'Catholic Outdoor Renewal' and means heart or spirit in Latin. COR was founded in 2016 out of the desire of its founders to share transformational encounters with Christ through backcountry experiences with people from around the country. Each founding team member had experienced deep personal conversion through their time spent in creation and were hungry to invite others into similar encounters with Christ.

Wilderness is at the heart of COR’s ministry for many reasons, but first and foremost because of the exhaustive spiritual tradition of the Church - every major figure in scripture and many of the saints, including those of recent times, have spent time in wilderness in preparation and renewal for the mission that God has called them to. We believe that wilderness has always been a place of meeting God because it is a direct encounter with His creation and the work of His hands. Our modern lives are often surrounded by the work of man’s hands - buildings, suburbs, technology, etc. - and exposing ourselves to wilderness exposes us in a more direct way to His Heart for us as revealed through His ‘First Book’ of creation.”

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as a chaplain and to support the mission of COR Expeditions in forming young men and women of faith and character. Please join me in praying for all who will be participating in our expedition, that the Lord may continue to guide them as disciples and leaders in their families, parishes, campuses, and communities.
