After the conclusion of the hymn, the Mass begins with the sign of the Cross (reminding us of our baptism), and the priest greets us. The greeting is the Triune God Himself welcoming us into his presence. The priest has the option to choose from different greetings, all of which are directly from the Bible.

In his homily today, Father invited us to reflect on what we nourish our heart, mind and spirit with on a daily basis. He encouraged us to nourish ourselves with only those things that give life to us, and life to others: prayer, forgiveness, compassion, hope and trust in the Lord. (This is not an exhaustive list.) Take a few minutes sometime today to honestly think about what you personally nourish your heart, mind and spirit with. Are these giving you life and bringing you closer to Christ and his Church or are they doing the opposite?

Beginning tomorrow, Saturday, August 7th, we will begin to celebrate daily Mass at 9:00AM every FIRST Saturday of the month. Traditionally, the Church has devoted the Saturday liturgy to the Virgin Mary. There are several reasons why the Saturday liturgy is devoted to the Virgin Mary. According to St. Thomas Aquinas, “Saturday [is held] in honor of the glorious Virgin Mary [because she] remained unshaken in faith all day Saturday after the death of her Divine Son.”

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration. To be transfigured means to be transformed. A transformation involving our Savior takes place, where three of his apostles (Peter, James and John) are present to give witness to the event that glorifies the divine person of Jesus. Through this miracle, Jesus showed his apostles that regardless of what other events would transpire throughout the course of his earthly life (suffering, disfigurement and crucifixion), his divinity would always be present and intact. Jesus died, but he rose again in glory.

Beginning this Friday, August 6, we will be celebrating Mass on Fridays. The first Friday of each month will be dedicated to the devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This devotion is significant because it reminds us of Jesus’s willingness to sacrifice His life for each one of us. Everything that he did for us is rooted in the love contained within His heart. Unfortunately, this immense love is more often than not received with ingratitude, even by many Christians. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus helps us properly and reverently receive and return His love with a heart full of gratitude.
