You Don't Have to Clean Up Your Backyard Before You Come to God

He knows your failures. He knows your regrets. He knows the addictions you carry, the anger you haven't dealt with, the doubts you've never told anyone, the shame you've been hiding. He knows what's behind the fence. And he still says — come near. You don't have to mow the grass first.

You let people see the front yard, where the grass is cut, the flowers are planted, everything looks great. But behind the fence? That's where the stuff you don't want anyone to see lives. The weeds. The junk. The things you're embarrassed about. And somehow, even at church, nobody actually knows who you are.

Before Jesus gave any command about love, he demonstrated it. He got on his knees and washed his disciples' feet — including Judas, the man who was about to hand him over to be killed. If you knew someone was about to betray you in the worst possible way, would you have knelt down and washed their feet? That's the standard Jesus set.

A lot of people treat church like a restaurant — you show up, you sit down, you evaluate the experience, and you decide whether to come back. But that's not what it was ever meant to be. The church isn't a place you attend. It's a family you belong to. And families don't just serve you — they carry you.
