Almighty God, you gave your servant St. John of Damascus special gifts of grace to understand and teach the truth revealed in Christ Jesus: Grant that by this teaching we may know you, the one true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Alleluia - let us keep the feast!

The marks this holiest of days with the only variation in the year to the opening of the day with the 95th psalm : we are enjoined instead to sing or say the Easter Anthem, continuing a tradition going back through the Sarum Breviary and beyond that Easter Day overridingly necessitated the proclamation of the new covenant hope through the words of the New Testament, that the world might hear and receive God's holy word in scripture as well as sacrament.

If you didn't get the opportunity to hear these words in church today, do read or sing them aloud - they are a wonderful inheritance given to us all.

'After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost'.

From the Gospel appointed for Good Friday.

Give thanks today for Christ's saving sacrifice on the Cross.

'And above all things ye must give most humble and hearty thanks to God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, for the redemption of the world by the death and passion of our Saviour Christ, both God and man; who did humble himself, even to the death upon the Cross, for us miserable sinners, who lay in darkness and the shadow of death; that he might make us the children of God, and exalt us to everlasting life'.

From the third exhortation at the Holy Communion.

Give thanks this evening for Christ's sacrifice for your salvation. He died for you.

Taught by the Prayer Book, let us always carefully and prayerfully prepare our hearts before approaching the Lord's Table.

'For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat; this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come'.

From the Epistle appointed for the Thursday before Easter (I Corinthians 11.17-end).

Give thanks this evening for the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Almighty God, you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses: Grant that we, encouraged by the good example of your servant John Wycliffe, may persevere in running the race that is set before us, until at last, with him, we attain to your eternal joy; through Jesus Christ, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
